Plans for 400 new homes near junction 23 of the M5 have cleared the first hurdle after Somerset Council approved a screening request for the site

*Flood Alert* at River Yeo and Parrett, The Levels (Somerset) Floodwater is reducing but a considerable amount of water remains on the Somerset Levels and Moors. Flooding is still affecting the low-lying moors near the Rivers Yeo, Parrett, Sowy and Kings Sedgemoor Drain. We are maximising use of the River Sowy (Parrett Relief Channel) to drain the upstream moors, as river levels and water levels allow. Pumping stations are operating around Langport and temporary pumps over-pump at Dunball sluices during high tides, when water cannot gravitate into the River Parrett. Sunday and Monday begin largely grey and drizzly but brighten, clearing slowly throughout the day. Tuesday night sees a frontal band of rain and a return to unsettled rain and showers across the area, from the west. We are closely monitoring the situation, and our Field Teams are operating structures and pumps. Take care and avoid walking, cycling or driving through flood water. Don’t put yourself or others at risk. This message will be updated by 1pm on 9 March 2026
