when ukraine first started hitting the caspian oil rigs, did putin bolt up in moscow screaming "DUNSTERFORCE! DUNSTERFORCE!"? for god's sake *they have banned free coffee refills* on those islands now and russians still see this man out of the corner of their eye in the bathroom mirror every night.

OH is researching what his great-uncle Lt. Col. Reggie Hunt was doing in Northern Persia towards the end of WW1. Turns out he was in an episode of "Ripping Yarns" 🙂

I THINK Louise Provan was working on a new book about Dunsterforce. Not sure if she's made the jump to here yet.
The whole Transcaspian campaign is very much her wheelhouse though, so a great person to talk to about it if needed. I very much bow to her knowledge of the campaign.

Finding myself reading "The Adventures of Dunsterforce", Lionel Charles Dunsterville's 1920 memoir about a 1917 British expedition to Tiflis, of a Friday evening, in an effort to combat the writing rut by reading. It's really quite excellent.

OH & I can't get over the name Dunsterforce. It sounds like someone had read too many Boy's Own Adventures. We believe Dunsterville may have coined it himself.

Yah. Good in WWII, when the Persian opposition wasn't against the Allies. Just as sending Dunsterforce north to Baku worked out fine in WWI. Now? Unlikely.

Let me introduce you to the premise behind the Dunsterforce Invasion of Russia, 1918-1919 - and point out the location (at least in the '90s) of NSA listening stations and guess what's at the other end, the British GCHQ. Try a little 'Tools of Empire' - Daniel Headrick. Been there - done that.

Let me introduce you to the premise behind the Dunsterforce Invasion of Russia, 1918-1919 - and point out the location (at least in the '90s) of NSA listening stations and guess what's at the other end, the British GCHQ. Try a little 'Tools of Empire' - Daniel Headrick. Been there - done that.
I'm recalling how the British War Cabinet, c 1917, suckered the US Administration into forcing Henry Ford to provide Ford trucks to enable the Dunsterforce Mission to North Persia. 'Saving the starving Armenians'. Sometimes the suckers just can't get ahead of themselves.

Marc - let me tell you how the British War Cabinet in 1917 conned the Ford Motors to provide the British Army with Ford trucks to 'supply food to the starving Armenians'. 'Dunsterforce' then used to move troops to Baku, to claim the oilfields. Trust me. I wrote the book.
