It hadn't been long since Duvac had bedded down, and yet, already, he was being woken up by a familiar voice crackling through the intercom. "Duvac, get up. I've found another one." It had been like this nonstop for the past four months, ever since Chase's nephew had vanished. They'd already been tasked with finding and destroying the labs the Untouched had founded to steal immortality for themselves, but the moment Adrian had gone missing, Chase had thrown himself into overdrive, barely sleeping and only eating when the healers forced him to. His personality, usually overexcited and cheery, had changed to brooding and angry. He'd never been prone to choleric outbursts, but just last week, he'd yelled at Nina, his mate, the woman who meant the world to him.

Sometimes, Duvac regretted ever proving himself competent. Efficiency always came at a price, and for him, that price was responsibility, leadership. Not that he didn't like leading and teaching others how to defend themselves, but the downside continued to eat at him, slowly hollowing him out like acid dripping on a rock. He remembered every soldier he'd lost, the names burning themselves into his very soul. It had always been like that, even when he was still mortal, still fighting for a crazed emperor with visions of grandeur, watching his companions fall like flies from either starvation or festering wounds they gained in battle.

“Get your ass to the infirmary. Now.” Duvac’s tone was ice—clipped, no-nonsense, stripped of any pretense. “We might have a tracking chip on our hands.” To his credit, Chase didn’t laugh. Didn’t make a joke. His voice shifted immediately, dropping into something more serious. “Got it. I’ll be there in a minute. Tell Rafael—” “I know.” Duvac cut him off before the sentence finished, slamming the intercom button to end the call and immediately dialing the next code.

“How are we doing?” he asked, voice smoother now, the bite from earlier tempered by rest and clarity. Now that the fog had lifted, the bigger picture loomed heavier on his shoulders. The humans had succeeded. They had created a shadowborn. And if they could replicate that… Then the war was on the verge of changing. Margaret glanced up from her notes. “Honestly? A lot better,” she said. “Brain function’s stabilized. No swelling now that the tumor and chip are gone. I’ve taught him the basics of telepathic shielding, too. He picked it up fast.” Duvac gave a tight nod and pulled a stool closer, flipping the folder lightly in one hand but not yet opening it. He watched Judah for a beat. The man’s gaze hadn’t dropped, hadn’t flickered. “Then do you feel ready to answer a few questions?” he asked. Judah hesitated for half a second, throat working with a quiet swallow. Then he gave a small but steady nod. “Yeah,” he said, voice hoarse but clear. “I am.”

"Do I have time for a drink?" he asked unceremoniously. "Should be okay," Chase answered. "I'm still going through the data." "I'll meet you in fifteen," Duvac answered, then ended the call, swinging his legs over the edge of the bed, bare feet landing on the cold wooden floor. Padding across the room, he made his way to the mini-fridge tucked in the corner, pulling out a bottle of blood and twisting off the cap. Crossing into the common area—a space large enough to host strategy meetings for around twenty people—he popped the bottle into the microwave and punched in the timer.

"W-we zapped him out," the woman answered. "With the computer chip in his brainstem, right?" Duvac asked, a feral growl rumbling in his chest. "Des monstres, autant que vous êtes," he cursed. "What else does it do besides tracking him like a rabid dog?" This time, the woman fell silent, staring up at him, wide-eyed and afraid. Duvac took a deliberate step forward, his boot landing in the pool of blood that had gathered underneath the man he'd drained dry with a wet splash. "Now, now, don't be coy; you must know what else it does," Duvac growled. "I-If I tell you, you will kill me!" she gasped in terror. "I will kill you either way," Duvac nonchalantly answered. "The how, however, depends entirely on your cooperation."

"There are two exits; we need to cut these off first," Chase explained. He had memorized the blueprints, knowing the exact locations of every camera, guard, and blind spot. Today's mission had to be a complete success, and he wouldn't allow any failures to ruin his chance at saving his nephew. He didn't usually go on missions, but no one complained that he took charge of this one. "A small team will infiltrate through the vents while the rest of us breach the main entrances," he continued to explain. "Juniper will disable the security feeds, leaving them blind." He looked at Jasper and Grace. "You two handle the labs. Duvac and I take the cages."

I'd describe #DuvacOC as morally grey. He's an old vampire, a former soldier and currently fighting another war. He'll make questionable decisions if it is to protect his people.

Like killing one of the prisoners for show and to scare the others into compliance.

Both my protagonists chose immorality for the same reason.
