We used the historic Dwingeloo telescope to bounce a signal off the surface of Venus, and receive its echo! This marks only the second time that amateurs have achieved an 'EVE' (Earth-Venus-Earth) bounce. Venus was about 40 million kilometers from Earth.

I read that the Voyager phoned home to earth from one light day away. Or 25 billion kilometers. And it made me feel very small and that made me genuinely happy.

Gisteren fotografeerde ik in Dwingeloo deze kerk met de uivormige torenspits, die plaatselijk "de Siepel" wordt genoemd.

Dit is de Sint-Nicolaaskerk in Dwingeloo, een gotische kerk uit de 15e eeuw. De toren heeft een uivormige spits die in de volksmond "de Siepel" wordt genoemd. Rode kerkbankjes in de St. Nicolaaskerk in Dwingeloo op een terra plavuizen vloer.

Old beech that lost its crown in a storm.

Deze oude beuk staat Dwingeloo naast Havezate Westrup Het is de oudste en dikste beuk van Drenthe, met een geschatte leeftijd van zo'n 270 jaar en een omtrek van ruim 6,6 meter. Door een storm verloor de boom zijn kroon. This old beech in Dwingeloo next to Havezate Westrup, is the oldest and thickest beech in Drenthe, with a estimated age of about 270 years and a circumference of over 6.6 meters. Due to a storm, the tree lost its crown.

The 25m Dwingeloo telescope is a heritage site but the best part is the amateur astronomers who still get to use it. It’s a live site, not just a museum static display.
