#EAPC
Well we know that, but as we know they've destroyed EAPC compliant eBikes too. 😒

The problem is not the laws or regulations, it's enforcement and education.

Particularly interested in anyone who's run up against this and been stopped and questioned while on a legal or close to legal EAPC.

We already have laws and regulations that define what is an Electrically Assisted Pedal Cycle (EAPC), treated as a bicycle and legal anywhere a bicycle is legal. And laws that define what is an Electric Motorcycle and how it can be used, treated as a motorcycle.

nd corresponding age-standardized rates (ASRs) from 1990 to 2023 were obtained from GBD 2023. Temporal trends were assessed using estimated annual percentage change (EAPC) and Joinpoint regression with annual percentage change (APC) and average annual percentage change (AAPC). (🧵 3/10)

Fleet is doing a lot of lifting in this headline, they have two, one in Lancaster and one in Morecambe. news.lancashire.police.uk/news/2026/oc...
Lancaster police benefit from new fleet of electronically assisted bikes
Officers have recently received two new EAPC (Electrically Assisted Pedal Cycle) bikes to enhance patrol capabilities and improve visibility.

How many 'illegal ebikes' have I seen, that be ZERO as they don't exist! But carry on decieving the public by calling illegal unregistered electric motorcycles (defined by the EAPC regs) as ebikes which they are not! Stop being part of the problem with ebike lies!
“Who else had already spotted them? Everyone on the pavement. Everyone behind the wheel. The Met, who seized more than 2,500 illegal e-bikes and e-scooters in the first seven months of this year. Basically anyone with eyes”

So the illegal use of unregistered electric motorcycles as damaging the ebike & motorcycle trade? TBH I ain't surprised. Nor am I surprised of some of the MPs clearly bigoted (& likely motonormativity) views on eBikes & lack of understanding of the government's own very clear to understand EAPC regs
October 22, 2026 at 2:49 PM
To be fair to police though, one of the big issues here is in training staff to actually understand and be able to perceive different between a legal ebike/EAPC and an illegally modified one or street illegal one. The entire area's a mess currently with lots of consequences.
October 21, 2026 at 1:50 PM
...the same goes for bikes fitted with conversion kits that exceed the EAPC spec.

They're not e-bikes.
October 19, 2026 at 11:02 AM
The rules are condensed onto one government page. I don't think it could be clearer apart from double checking to confirm that yes, a twist and go with type approval that meets the 250w/15.5mph power/speed rules is still an EAPC
October 20, 2026 at 7:57 AM
...but you are continuing to use terms like "illegally modified e-bikes" and "conversion kits" where these are easily conflated with EAPC-compliant e-bikes & legal packages like Swytch, which muddies the conversation and leads directly to outcomes like policing seizures of EAPCs during enforcement.
October 18, 2026 at 9:25 PM
...the point being - you're better placed than most to try and steer the nomenclature towards "illegal e-motorbikes" which is much closer to the legislative reality of both Sur-Ron-type and non-EAPC compliant pedal cycles, so you're otherwise bound to keep getting feedback like this.
October 18, 2026 at 9:27 PM
if a bike does not meet Electrically Assisted Pedal Cycle (EAPC) rules then it is classified as a motor vehicle, moped, or motorcycle, must be registered, taxed, insured, type-approved, and the rider must hold a valid driver's licence and wear an approved motorcycle helmet.

It's mostly for theft cover, also includes breakdown cover which for me is essential. Just finding the insurance companies & their underwriters can't grasp the basics of the EAPC regs.

EAPC isn't close to NATO membership though - Turkmenistan and Kazakhstan are members and they aren't likely to join NATO this week. There are EU defence obligations, as you say, but my understanding is that they fall some way short of NATO membership.
October 18, 2026 at 8:44 PM
Eire is a signatory to NATO's PIP and EAPC
One of the reasons for the alliance is logistical.
The militaries of the EU must have equipment that is interchangable, for example, if your German comrade is killed you can pick up his gun and use your ammunition.
October 18, 2026 at 8:28 PM
The Department of Transport is extremely clear on the matter:

"If an EAPC does not comply with the regulations, it is treated as a motor vehicle under the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984 and the Road Traffic Act 1988."

Absolutely no grey area there.
