Jazz OTD: On October 14, 1980, the original World Saxophone Quartet (Hamiet Bluiett, Julius Hemphill, Oliver Lake, and David Murray) recorded their sensational album "Revue." This was early in what I think was an exceptional decade (1979-1989) for them. #jazzsky

This weekend I have driven miles, walked a few more, drunk coffee as the sun rose over the sea, visited two old friends, a son called Beetle, heard talented musicians young enough to be my grandchildren playing my favourite jazz in chapels and pubs. I am exhausted with joy. Life is good.

ART BLAKEY: Today I’m remembering the legendary Art Blakey, a true giant of jazz and one of the most influential bandleaders of all time. These photos are from when I had the opportunity to play with him early in my career.

Thank you, Mr. Blakey, and Happy Birthday.

Nice! Which one's your favorite?

Here's my 3 bases. Warwick fretless is the 3rd. I ade the Fender Jazz style from paper route earnings a month at a time in the early 80s. The Demarzio pickups still sound great!

Jazz OTD: The wonderful Japanese composer/arranger Miho Hazama had one of her early triumphs with the famous Metropole Orkest Big Band at Bimhuis in Amsterdam on October 13, 2017. It's excellent throughout, but this piece is the best match of Thelonious Monk's compositions and her voice. #jazzsky

I grew up getting to see the Ray Brown Trio, once a year in Moscow, Idaho at the Min Hampton Jazz Festival. Even then I knew what I was seeing was an incredible bridge to early 20th century jazz. Ray Brown was a master of an upright base and could lead just really tight jazz trios.

This looks like a juvenile. What do you think?

Grey Catbirds are 1 of my absolute favorites. Their plumage is elegant. Their song is like jazz, so free.

They arrive in my yard in late Spring & leave in the early Fall.
