Unrelatedly, I'd like to point out that states, not the US government, issue Enhanced Driver's Licenses, and EDLs are valid for land travel to Canada and Mexico.
At one point, both Manitoba and Ontario allowed their residents to apply for Enhanced Driver's Licenses (EDLs) that included citizenship information. So did BC.
EDLs were always *optional*, though, mainly for frequent US travelers.
So few people signed up that all 3 provinces abandoned EDLs.

Most Real IDs do *not* prove citizenship. (EDLs, which are available in only 5 states are an exception) The GOP’s “SAVE” Act thus misleads when it says voters can prove citizenship w/ “a form of ID issued consistent with the reqmts of…REAL ID…that indicates the applicant is a citizen of the US…” 1/

Other options besides NEXUS for being able to travel into Canada in a pinch include Enhanced Driving Licences (EDLs) which are issued by your state, not the Federal Government.

7/ The new SAVE Act’s list of approved citizenship documentation is at the top. As before, marriage certificates are *not* included, effectively disenfranchising many of the 69M women whose last names don’t match their birth certificates (not an issue for those with passports or EDLs that do match)

For everyone super confused: An enhanced ID is not the same as a RealID. It is REALID compliant but it lets you cross the border into Canada and Mexico without a passport

The republican SAVE act would also not let you use real id to prove citizenship. Only EDLs (which only five states offer). Otherwise, passport or id plus birth records.

Washington, Michigan, Minnesota, New York, and Vermont.
