Last but not least, a listener gave me a tour of the National Museum of Computing at Bletchly Park. The highlight was definitely the EDSAC recreation project.

youtu.be/DjhRRj6WYcs?... is an incredible introduction to things you may take for granted, including the job queue being a literal queue. Maurice Wilkes was still turning up to Computer Lab happy hours on Friday afternoons to have a beer well into his 90s. Fucking legend.

Hodge false would not surprise me.

BSD was a conjecture made with computer assistance, EDSAC-2 at Cambridge in the early 1960s.

I'll be interested to follow the first new conjectures proposed by AI, and unsolvable for decades with trillions of tokens.

Have you seen what computers of his day looked like?

I've seen EDSAC and Colossus and he's just describing a building full of them (at www.tnmoc.org).

A blue plaque has been unveiled at the University of Cambridge for the Electronic Delay Storage Automatic Calculator (EDSAC) created in 1949 which was the first practical computer that could both hold instruction & data in the same memory. It weighed 2 tonnes. 👇

I can’t believe I didn’t see this on Bluesky sooner. Again, congrats on the release Bloopy! It’s amazing to see MM’s concept and evolution over the years come to fruition.

Real ones remember when EDSAC was white (incomprehensible sentence for everyone barring like 5 people).

Alexander Shafto "Sandy" Douglas CBE (21 May 1921 – 29 April 2010) was a British professor of computer science, credited with creating the first graphical computer game, OXO, a version of noughts and crosses, in 1952 on the EDSAC computer at University of Cambridge. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sandy_D...

yooooooooooo lmfao it's so funny how we've circled back around to computers being as big as a whole room again.

What are we doing?

On this day in 1949, the EDSAC at Cambridge University ran its first programs!
It calculated a table of squares and a list of prime numbers, becoming the first practical general-purpose stored-program computer in regular service. The digital world started here.
