#EECS
Finally, let me introduce myself. I'm a postdoc at UC Irvine in the EECS department (though I'm better thought of as an applied mathematician).

From time to time I do technical threads like these on twitter, but the quality of engagement there is declining and I hope to become more active here!

While #MissKitty has her little #teacher hat on, like all morning LOL, here comes a reminder that we can all master #AI with a little effort. Remember, #AI is an idiot, so let's not anthropomorphize it anymore. Please. You can make the #MIT equivalent course if you want. I'm busy. Here you go! 👇🏻👇🏻👇🏻

This is what #AI can HELP you do. It can HELP fulfill your imagination & when your #imagination gets out of sex and violence and greed, then you can go places. I've said that I could pass a #bar #exam in 6 months. This is part of why. #AI must be #open #sourced entirely. #Protection and advancement.

Some 1950s AI systems deliberately used randomness to mimic human creativity. Unexpected answers were valued—a contrast with today's efforts to make chatbots predictable.
Q&A: How AI came to model the 'messy' human mind
Generative artificial intelligence models are rooted in ideas of mid-20th-century engineers who thought some amount of irrationality was essential for a machine that could think like a human, contends Benjamin Lindquist, an assistant professor in the MIT History Section, who holds an MIT Schwarzman College of Computing shared position with the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science (EECS) and is a principal investigator in the Laboratory for Information and Decision Systems.

"Within a year, the computer-science post-bac became Ecampus’s biggest program. In December 2013, the then-head of EECS deposited $20,000 into every tenure-track faculty member’s account, proceeds from the tuition that their program had raised."

What has the computer-science enrollment cliff meant for colleges? I took a look at Oregon State University, which lost 23 percent of its CS majors, leading to a $19 million budget shortfall(!), and chatted with CS faculty members across the country: www.chronicle.com/article/the-...
Oregon State U. Put Its Chips on Computer Science. It Lost $19 Million.
The fallout shows the risk of betting enrollment on job trends.

I'm delighted to announce that I'll join MIT EECS as an Assistant Professor next Fall! I will be recruiting graduate students this cycle, please apply if you're interested in the science of deep learning! Despite the ambient doomerism, now is a great time to do research.

I know, my dad is #mechanical #engineering, my bro is EECS, and I know several #engineering professors- the UM engineering grads generally become white collar managers like my dad at Ford, not the assembly line workers building the factories 🤷🏻‍♀️

@marenbuettner.bsky.social Hi! I'm a PhD student in France working on intestinal EECs and scRNA-seq. I saw your work at Helmholtz Munich and would love to ask your advice on potential host labs for a 3-month research stay. Would you mind if I sent you a DM?
