Rappler's technology coverage has refocused on public welfare, rights, safety, and accountability following the Office of the Ombudsman's order to suspend DICT Undersecretary David Almirol Jr. for six months without pay. The suspension stems from a conflict of interest involving the eGov project, which awarded P1.55 billion in contracts to a company later subcontracted to Multisys Technologies Corporation, a firm Almirol founded. This follows Rappler's investigative report based on a DICT internal audit, which exposed the issue nearly a year after it was first reported. The newsroom has shifted from gadget reviews to in-depth investigations on how technology policies affect citizens, including a recent report on a 430,000-member online community exploiting women through non-consensual sharing of intimate content. Rappler emphasizes the need for public understanding of digital technologies, noting that 3.24 billion people globally use generative AI monthly, yet few grasp how these tools process data scraped from the internet. The #EverydayTech chat room in Rappler's app aims to demystify technology, discussing topics like data privacy and AI ethics. The DICT, as the government body responsible for ICT development, must ensure citizens benefit from technology while protecting them from potential harms. Rappler's approach combines investigative journalism with community engagement, inviting public collaboration on stories involving platforms and government regulation. The newsroom also highlights ongoing DICT challenges, including efforts to regulate Discord for extremist use and leadership changes following Secretary Henry Aguda's exit and the appointment of Robert Joseph de Claro. This coverage reflects Rappler's commitment to technology journalism that centers on the global majority's perspective, recognizing that digital technologies have become inseparable from daily life.
