And expanded the EITC
He raised taxes too.

In 1913 we did not Social Security, Medicaid, Medicare, the EITC, SNAP or much else of a social safety net. Life expectancy was about 52 years. If this is the era they want to go back to, lets hear about all of it.
Trump: "In 1913 they traded to the income tax system. We used to be all tariff. And we had no income tax and we had the wealthiest country we ever had proportionately from about 1870 to 1913. We had more money than anybody."

Medicaid, SNAP, EITC, etc produce a massive DISINCENTIVE to work (with varying details) by dialing back benefits as you earn more in wages

Greg Leiserson is the former Deputy Assistant Secretary for Tax Analysis at the U.S. Treasury.

He explains how the GOP tax bill will add new administrative burdens - "precertification" - to EITC recipients so to limit access. 🧵

For half a century, the EITC has been a lifeline for hardworking Americans, lifting millions out of poverty and rewarding work.

I’m fighting to protect and expand the EITC because the tax code should work for Americans building a better life — not just the wealthy few.

This paper is a great example of solid evidence of systemic discrimination:
"Black taxpayers are audited at 2.9 to 4.7 times the rate of non-Black taxpayers."
This reflects a series of choices built into the IRS audit algorithm: focus on the EITC, and overclaiming of credits.

The House reconciliation bill includes a provision that could keep many thousands of individuals from receiving EITC. This little noticed provision requires IRS to precertify millions of individuals for EITC. See this piece from Janet Holtzblatt. taxpolicycenter.org/taxvox/one-b...
One Big Beautiful Bill Act’s EITC Precertification Requirement Could Delay Refunds
With precertification, many eligible taxpayers would have to wait longer for their EITC, causing financial hardships in the meantime--if they get it all.

No they also go after taxpayers who claim EITC. 🙄

it's especially funny when you talk to conservative evangelicals and go "so you're in favour of expanding the EITC, right" and get a blank stare
there's this sense that we have to treat it as a difference of opinion whether we should fix poverty with welfare or work. you straightforwardly, as a simple matter of fact, cannot reach low levels of poverty with changes to work!
How Much Poverty Can Work Alleviate?
Way less than the evangelical poverty story would tell you.

3. Massive spending cuts. Outlays are such (fy24):
-$1500b social security
-$865b Medicare
-$610b Medicaid
-$370b snap/tanf/eitc/etc (“welfare”)
-$750b other mandatory (vets benefits, federal retirement, etc)
-$880b debt interest
-$850b defense
-$950b literally everything else

Deficit is $1800b.

Totally fair to hit PRWORA/TANF pretty hard, but AFDC was also a pretty flawed program.

(And the expansions of programs like SNAP, EITC, and Medicaid are good)

The real low-wage-employer subsidy is work requirements/EITC. If you remove the ability to survive without the boss, then you lower bargaining power and wages (though this analysis is complicated by work requirements not actually raising labor force participation)

Thank you for your years of leadership on expanding the EITC in Michigan!! #EITC #mileg
A thread from my brilliant colleague Sen Chang about Democrats' recent passage of tax relief for low-income workers in Michigan.
Today is EITC Awareness Day!

Otherwise known here in Michigan as the Working Families Tax Credit, the expanded Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) is an incredible policy that helps Michigan families struggling to make ends meet. #EITC 🧵

Can you guess what happens when a Walmart Supercenter enters a community?
...
...
...

◾EITC receipts in the community increase
◾ workers' incomes go down

as a direct result.

"Walmart Supercenters gradually accumulate and exercise monopsony power, with negative consequences for workers."

The Earned Income Tax Credit is one of the most effective poverty-busting tools that we have.

That’s why I'm proud to introduce legislation with @khanna.house.gov, @cortezmasto.senate.gov, @bennet.senate.gov to expand the EITC & bring much needed tax relief to hard-working Americans.
April 9, 2025 at 11:36 PM
I don't think that's what happened though? SNAP, EITC, and Medicaid also expanded.

They want to make anyone who has ever claimed EITC a potential target. It is so fucking evil.
