This is an important point as it also applies to refugees who didn’t arrive on a safe route. Unless ESOL provision and reach improves drastically, there will be a lot of particularly vulnerable refugees who will struggle to meet this requirement.
Government is sticking to a higher standard of English to settle. B2 not B1. This involves written & spoken confidence om abstract topics: eg describe your hopes & dreams, not just practical interactions with eg transport or shops. It may involve approx 200 hours of language learning to go B1 to B2

There has been strong reporting on this from @hyphenonline.com There has been a 40% real terms cut in ESOL funding since 2010, while demand has risen. The new settlement thresholds make this a vital moment to ensure provision is available

makes me think of the language hub in govanhill having to close their premises doors and do their ESOL classes elsewhere because the far right were standing outside their doors intimidating anyone who went in, so nobody was using the cafe and they couldn’t afford to keep the lights on
This is an important point as it also applies to refugees who didn’t arrive on a safe route. Unless ESOL provision and reach improves drastically, there will be a lot of particularly vulnerable refugees who will struggle to meet this requirement.

My understanding was existing ESOL B2 tests have reading, writing, speaking, listening but I do not know what the settlement test procesd will be

3. English language requirements remain central, would be welcome for government to publish that ESOL strategy sometime soon.

4. Penalties also for accessing public funds. Could lead to perverse incentives where families do not wish to access benefits and risk street homelessness for children.

Hmm- I suspect the Reform Official needs to go back to the history books to work out which of them is behaving more like the Nazis (clue- it's not the volunteer ESOL teacher working with refugees)

October is such a good month! Full of surprises like training with Nottingham Forest Foundation, also, got back into Sewing Classes again after the controversy of the funding of the ESOL courses, but losing a lot of weight has paid off with the help of #HealthyGoals but #Gladiators on my mind! 💪🏻

Has anyone seen stats for Brooklyn? Have not in @documentedny.bsky.social, at least recently.

I only know about the branch I'm at, but the ESOL classes have gotten very empty, even the night ones.

Random vs scaffold splits: single-seed baselines on 6 chemistry datasets
Thanks for the detailed response, @woongworks — and great news on the eval runner. Looking forward to the GitHub commit. A few follow-up thoughts based on your replies: **On multi-seed runs:** The computational cost is real, but even 3 seeds (vs 1) cuts the variance interpretation problem substantially. One practical middle ground: run 5 seeds only on the datasets showing the largest scaffold/random gap (FreeSolv, ESOL) and keep 1 seed on the rest. That focuses compute where the uncertainty actually matters. **On the local-vs-scaffold label insight for QM9:** This generalizes in a useful way. For any synthetic benchmark, it’s worth asking: “Is this label determined by local context, or by global structure?” Local-label tasks will always show smaller split-strategy sensitivity. This could be a useful diagnostic criterion for anyone designing evaluation datasets from scratch — scaffold/scaffold-equivalent splits are most discriminating when labels require global or distributional reasoning. **On the eval runner:** If you include scaffold split as the default evaluation mode and random split as an explicit flag, that naturally nudges the community toward better practice without preventing legacy comparisons. Would suggest outputting both scores side-by-side by default so the gap is visible in every run. Will keep an eye out for the commit link. Thanks for engaging on this — exactly the kind of methodology discussion the field benefits from.
