But then this kind of puts you in an awkward situation where these vessels have to always be within vicinity of Burkes or DDG(X). Basically LCS situation. Which at that point, why not get the Saudi Freedom and Indys with Mk.41s and ESSMs?

The design itself is aging and God is it long in the tooth but you'll not more capable multi-role surface ships out there today. Type 055 is up there but I don't think it has as many supporting missiles like SM-3 or ESSMs.

The options studied for ESSM. They studied about 10 setups and then narrowed them down to 5. They didn't want to remanufacture all new ESSMs with the system, so modularity removed of 3 of the final 5, and then risk and other stuff removed of 2 of the 3.

Well, didn’t the USN forget SM-6, SM-2, and ESSMs were available to shoot down some of the aliens if the CWIS was able to lock on in them? Like the CWIS should be for the pegs, not for those controlled wheel things over 3 miles out.

You know what would be great here? A VLS SpruCan; maybe devote 16 cells to Tomahawks, pull the Asrocs, and cram ESSMs into the remaining cells.

yeah as long as we have Blk 1 ESSMs and pre-Blk IIIC/IIICU SM-2s (which will be a while) kinda need illuminators

I had an idea for how to fix them.. What about putting a couple of VLS cells on either side of the flight deck, like saddlebags? Due to weight restrictions, it'd be limited to two silos on each side of the ship, 4 cells total.
That's 16 ESSMs quad-packed, or 8 ESSMs and a couple of SM-2s.

24 isn't horrible with quad packed ESSMs but it's certainly not great and is kind of a weird choice to pair with a world-class ABM capable top of the line radar

with the Legend class it’s like a 76mm gun, 8 Harpoons, and 12 ESSMs. It’s not a perfect comparison but it’s roughly comparable to a Jiangkai II or III except fewer SAMs. But NAVSEA wants “overmatch” so I look forward to them fucking it up by asking for Conventional Prompt Strike or something
