For weeks now, there has been speculation in the media about the fate of Olivér Várhelyi, the 🇭🇺 commissioner widely regarded as a staunch supporter of Orbán. According to today’s article in @euractiv.com , the Tisza party would like to get rid of Várhelyi, but the EPP leadership is standing by him 🤷♀️

Removing an EU Commissioner following national elections would set a devastating precedent. It would effectively make the EU Treaties a dead letter. Ties between EU Commissioners and national governments should be cut, not tightened.
Not “thanks to traditions” but because the Treaties require EU Commissioners to be independent from national governments. In practice EU Commissioners are seen as national ambassadors, in blatant breach of the Treaties. Time to activate Art 17,5 TEU and make the Commission truly independent
