Since you are flying through the EU, and they actually believe in passenger’s rights, you might be entitled to €600 euros + reimbursement for expenses. When you get home, look up EU261. It won’t apply directly to the diverted flight but may be arguable for these knock-on delays.

Ain't no telling how much money these airlines save by not announcing passenger rights for EU compensation. Paying, say, 250 passengers €600 each on a single flight would be nearly $200,000. And most U.S. Americans probably wouldn't expect to be paid. If you're *ever* traveling, look up "EU261".

EU261 does apply to the diverted flight, even though it originated in the UK, since the UK copied EU261 into UK law after Brexit. That's why there is a duty of care, which BA is kind of doing in that they will reimburse the hotel and meal expenses. /

It's a weird one. Under EU261 (and UK261 which mirrors it and would apply to BA) you don't get the extra compensation if it's "extraordinary circumstances". A medical emergency probably counts.

EU261 does apply to flights leaving Iceland, on any carrier. Ditto Norway and Switzerland (and Liechtenstein, in principle, although it has no international airport). Doesn't have to be a full EU member state.
