Despite significant single track sections, Euskotren runs metro-like service every 15 minutes on the narrow-gauge line from Irun to Donostia (and every 7.5 within Donostia itself).

To reach the tram terminus, on the former Euskotren line, at Bolueta. Despite being some of the widest tram vehicles I have ever seen, these are metre gauge too (and are identical to the also Euskotren-operated ones I caught in Vitoria when my trip to Cabo da Roca went wrong). #TheNarrowWay

Here’s the Euskotren crossing the bridge to France at 06:50 this morning. A cross border service every 30 mins, all day. And it’s *used* - this morning mostly for people going home to France after a night out in Spain!

Euskotren is, on first acquaintance, quite the contrast to RENFE. Efficient, punctual, tightly staffed and able to run a frequent service very effectively on long, single-track railways. Another one for my ‘The Basques are secretly Swiss’ conspiracy theory. #TheNarrowWay
