The European Space Surveillance and Tracking (EU SST) partnership is celebrating ten years of operations. Since its start in 2016, the initiative has grown significantly to improve safety in space. The program helps protect valuable satellites and other assets from collisions, debris, and dangerous re-entries into the Earth's atmosphere. It is an important project that demonstrates the power of European cooperation. Today, the partnership includes 19 member countries that work together to monitor the environment around our planet. By using a large network of 70 sensors worldwide, the team provides free, continuous data to more than 400 organizations. This helps operators keep their spacecraft safe and makes the EU a leader in space sustainability. The EU SST provides three main services: collision avoidance, re-entry analysis, and fragmentation analysis. These efforts ensure that European space activities remain secure and independent, supporting crucial infrastructure like the Galileo and Copernicus satellite systems for years to come.

Op 1 juli 2026 viert het EU Space Surveillance and Tracking (EU SST) initiatief zijn tienjarig bestaan. Wat ooit begon als een samenwerking tussen vijf lidstaten, is in een decennium uitgegroeid tot een cruciaal Europees netwerk dat helpt om satellieten te beschermen tegen botsingen in de ruimte. Door het delen van sensorgegevens en rekenkracht is de veiligheid van ruimtevaartuigen aanzienlijk vergroot. Tegenwoordig nemen negentien lidstaten deel aan dit partnerschap. Samen bewaken zij meer dan 690 satellieten en ondersteunen zij ruim 400 organisaties wereldwijd met essentiële diensten. Het netwerk maakt gebruik van zo'n zeventig sensoren verspreid over de hele wereld om objecten in een baan om de aarde nauwkeurig te volgen en risico's in kaart te brengen. De Europese Commissie en het agentschap EUSPA bieden hiermee 24 uur per dag gratis diensten aan voor botsingspreventie en analyse. Dit versterkt de autonomie van de Europese Unie in de ruimte en draagt bij aan een duurzamer beheer van onze ruimtevaartactiva voor de toekomst.
