#EVSE
Oh, and on the assumption you may have thought of this because of the install of the EVSE at my parents' place:

I connected all of the ground wires between the panel and the EVSE. The only thing I didn't do was bond each individual box to that wire, but they all already are because conduit.

Get real fancy with it and it can have, say, 4 2.5 kW elements and it will switch however many on that it can as determined by the circuit ampacity signalled by the EVSE.

if you're talking about running a sub-panel and not just a circuit for an EVSE, then I would probably go with a 100A panel. You might as well.

But as far as the EVSE you install, I still firmly believe anything over 32A is a luxury. I would install a good 14-50 and get a Grizzl-E Classic.

Ah great. That’ll complement this other fine product

I can charge other cars with my car now!

I'm being completely serious when I say that's the car's job entirely and a level 2 EVSE has no idea what's going on other than ground faults.

Following-up (forgot the outside wall part as I kept going)

Since you're doing an externally-mounted EVSE, absolutely don't bother with a 100A charging circuit. It's likely to be a much higher cost difference given your requirements.

Yes, it could be, the in the US market the solution which was settled on was to put temperature sensors inside the plug of the EVSE so it lowers charging current if it's overheating.

I've always found evse to load applications like this very interesting.
December 25, 2024 at 3:26 PM
This can be done! And there are solutions for it which will likely become relatively standardized.

But it does mean you need a much more complicated and expensive home charging setup than a 240V receptacle feeding an EVSE.

Iceland has this stipulation that if even one resident of an apartment complex asks for an EVSE, the included parking has to supply one.

This stuff can be done.

...and they do.

As a matter of fact the only EVSE I have experience with which generated heat as the car was charging didn't generate heat in the connections, but in the 10 gauge wire whip they decided to use between the 6-50 plug and the 30A charger itself

Not a question, but a point of interest for others that you have talked about before: you don’t need an EVSE (car charger) that provides the maximum charge speed your car can take. Most drivers can get away with a much lower charge speed because the cars charge overnight.

I upgraded my EVSE (home charger) to one that monitors home solar production and only charges my EV with excess solar, it's incredible!!

Many of the upgrades Michael and I have made to our homes and vehicles have been before necessity, out of an abundance of concern to reduce our impact and reliance on fascist funding fossil fuels.

This EVSE that charges with excess solar is one example, my EVSE was working fine…

We know you've been following the saga of the #juicebox charging stations, and how parent company #EnelX left its customers in the lurch. Now, you can say "goodbye" to that with an Open EVSE retrofit! (youtube) https://youtu.be/mJNu-CwH2zE (peertube) https://peertube.tv/w/jEUTnkgtktxBp1k52hUVfE

EVSE hardware that can predict when components are going to fail before they do. That's the kind of proactive maintenance that saves operators time and money.
