#EXILE//BABYLON
It's a self imposed Babylon. (You were my town now I'm in Exile) (I can go anywhere I want, anywhere I want, just not home.)

ffs now i’m gonna have to make an entire thread to analyse how the fall of babylon leads to taylor swift gay

Babylon fell on October 12th (10/12) after years of self-imposed EXILE of the king. the city was captured on the 16th of its month. babylon is track 16!

We’ve been having these debates all the way back to the first exile in Babylon. Some wanted to get back to Judea right away. Others stayed, and gave us the legacy of the Babylonian Talmud & diaspora.

They disagreed, and so do we. Maybe that’s why we call it Talmudic. 🧵

🧵586 BC: Babylonian forces destroyed the temple in Jerusalem and forcibly removed the Judean population, literally. In Psalm 137 is written from inside that exile. "By the rivers of Babylon, we sat down and wept, when we remembered Zion." Their captors demanded performance from their captives:

I think Rome is our equivalent to those uses of Babylon.

Babylon to us is generally the mild exile, the best of a bad situation, the symbol of functional Diaspora

I'll be honest.

Exile to Babylon would be rather merciful.

I've my doubts that you could find 10 righteous amongst the staff of this administration.

This doesn't even make sense on their own terms. Nebuchadnezzar is from Iraq, not Iran; Babylon is immediately south of Baghdad. Persian emperor Cyrus the Great, who ended the exile and allowed the Jews to rebuild the temple, was from Iran (which is still aka Persia).

I was reading about Babylon at the time of the Exile and they straight up did worship a piece of wood wrapped in foil

That’s nice and all, except the Neo Babylonian Empire, ruled by Nebuchadnezzar, was not part of the Persian empire. In fact, the Persian king Cyrus sacked Babylon and ended the Babylonian exile. To confuse Babylon (Iraq) with Persia (Iran) is profoundly ignorant.

Remembering Brent Dowe of The Melodians who was born on this day in 1946.

The Melodians most famous song is Rivers Of Babylon which Brent adapted from Psalms 19 & 137. He turned words of exile and captivity into a song of freedom...

If God is going to mess with us, I'd really rather it not be The Book of Job or the exile to Babylon.

I need some other gaylors to watch Bad Sisters because the first episode has a guy in a band named *Exile in Babylon* and SPOILER

there’s a scene very similar to the Patient Zero video where an abusive man drives recklessly

It’s striking that the Jewish diaspora is so often treated as an exilic anomaly, when in fact it has been one of the most continuous — and in the case of Babylon, the most stable — conditions of Jewish life since the first exile.

you know, days like today I feel the most Jewish for good or ill, I can feel what Lincoln called the mystic chords of memory, stretching back to those Jews trudging out of Jerusalem to exile by the rivers of Babylon mumbling "Shema Israel"

we last, we endure, we overcome.

but anyway, think about the collective mental break that happened right after the conquest and exile. we're probably talking no more than a couple thousand people, maybe. ezekiel hanging around the river in babylon and hallucinating seraphim and whatnot

And I mean that literally. Judaism as we know it is a product of the Babylonian exile (before that, it was the Israelite religion). A majority of Jews never came back from Babylon.

During the entire Second Temple period, there were more Jews outside Israel than in.

As a fun reminder, he also did an antisemitism during this year too, with a really weird comment about how Israel needs to moderate its actions because as the Bible teaches us, God sometimes punishes his chosen people with things like an exile to Babylon.

Babylon is that state which exercises arbitrary power to strip whole people groups of self-determination, to destroy the lives and erase the communities they’ve built, scattering them in exile.

This is not freedom. It is not citizenship to live under the heel of brute-force power. It is bondage.
This is heinous and evil. My parish has a sizable Sudanese population especially in our children’s ministry. My diocese has an entire thriving Sudanese congregation (St. Paul’s).

O my Jesus, turn our hearts of stone to hearts of flesh.

Blessed Mother, hide them beneath your mantle.

One of my favourite quiz questions I've written;

In 1978 Bony M sang The Rivers of Babylon reaching no. 1 in much of Europe. The song is about the exile of the old testament biblical writers following the conquest of Jerusalem by the Babylonians in 586 BCE.
