3/3 Ahasuerus finds Haman pleading with Esther for his life, a 17C roundel at Earsham, Norfolk:

'Then said the king,
Will he force the queen also before me in the house?
As the word went out of the king's mouth,
they covered Haman's face.'

The story of Dives and Lazarus in an early 16th Century Flemish roundel now at Earsham, Norfolk. Lazarus is shown wearing the uniform of a Lazar Hospital inmate, holding a begging bowl and a clapper to warn people he is coming. The story is in Luke 16:19-31. 1/2

The parable of Dives and Lazarus, today's gospel. In the background, Dives entertains his rich friends to a feast. In the foreground, Lazarus stands in the garb of a leper, bowl and clapper in hand, the dogs licking his sores. A Flemish roundel of c1530 now at Earsham, Norfolk.

Conocybe pygmaeoaffinis.

I collected this fungus from a wood at Earsham, Norfolk, last November & submitted it for analysis by the Norfolk Fungus Study Group DNA Team.

I wrongly thought it was a brittlestem (Psathyrella).

Results just back - a new species for Norfolk.

I'm finding it hard to see why this #lichen on sallow trunk in Earsham, Norfolk, England, isn't Punctelia borreri, except it would be first record for Norfolk, and only fourth for East Anglia. 'Starry-sky' look from scattered punctiform pseudocyphellae, soralia concentrated in thallus centre… 1/2

3/3 An early C19 roundel at Earsham, Norfolk, shows a jolly St Luke painting his icon, his bull looking on with a critical eye. The Four Evangelists here came as part of Samuel Yarington's resetting of C17 continental glass, and I think they must be by Yarington himself.

Haman's plot to get rid of the Jews is uncovered and foiled. He begs Queen Esther for his life, but King Ahaseurus discovers him, assumes he's forcing himself on Esther and orders his immediate death. An early 16th Century Flemish roundel, Earsham, Norfolk.

Thanks Nick Meade for access & @timholtwilson.bsky.social for arranging it, near Earsham had our furthest downstream swim in River Waveney, abounding in Roach, plus a pool of gorgeous Dace where the river flowed fast, constricted by a grove of Club-rush. #MySwim #Suffolk #Norfolk #rivers #fish 🧵1/8

Above the surface, it's a beautiful stretch of River Waveney at Earsham, framed by White Willows whose ghostly roots reach into the water. On the surface, some lovely rafts of Frogbit (corners of their leaves overlapping) & below, some beds of Lesser Water-parsnip. #Wildflowerhour #rivers 7/8

Dominant macrophyte in the River Waveney at Earsham is Arrowhead (Sagittaria sagittifolia). The submerged ribbon leaves are exceptionally broad and gungy, presumably reflecting eutrophication. At least the floating & emergent leaves were as attractive as ever. #wildflowerhour #rivers #flower 4/8

Candelaria concolor, Earsham, Norfolk, England. First hectad record. Most British records of this #lichen date from past 10-20 years: it's spreading because it tolerates nitrogen pollution well. Perhaps also under-recorded: of ~60 records in intensely agricultural East Anglia, 2/3 made since 2020.

Lecanora barkmaniana, Earsham, Norfolk, England. Nationally scarce; possibly just 3rd Norfolk record; but greatly under-recorded. Distinguished from very similar L compallens and L expallens by distinct yellow tint, K+ yellow and K/UV(dry)+ yellow (atranorin), and K/UV(wet)- (lack of xanthones).

In River Waveney near Earsham, a few small Perch, but not the abundance have seen elsewhere this summer. Met a shy Pike under a willow. Apart from that, only a few Threespine Sticklebacks & one shoal of Gudgeon. But visibility poor in this beleaguered river. Quite a lot of #fish disease. #Rivers 2/8

My family has been summering in Bungay since the 80s. Though the property they stay at is actually in Earsham.

We visit the Norfolk and Suffolk Aviation Museum in Flixton. Afterwards we go to the Bell, a pub in Wortwell.

I can do this all day.

We had some lovely views of the river, from high above and down below at Earsham. You can see tiny fish in the water in the second one.
