#EarthCube
This is getting out of hand!

Happy #SecretSamol to Earthcube (not of this parish) who gave me the prompt of a conversation between @amtebbel.bsky.social's character Duvall and a riverboat captain, both of whom are made of bugs, during the weird-west Sangfielle season: crudely-formed-chords.bandcamp.com/track/a-man-...

General question (that @litagate.bsky.social might know?): What ever happened to EarthCube?

Scientists from all 7 continents gathered at BIOS for a workshop on FAIR data practices in ship-based marine ecological time series. Hosted by IOCCP & supported by NSF’s EarthCube to make ocean data more Findable, Accessible, Interoperable & Reusable—empowering research, education & policy.

As I’m watching the official final end of Hallostream, I wanna thank @notquitereal.bsky.social and @katbamkapow.bsky.social (and earthcube) for another wonderful year of whatever the hell was happening in Clock Towers.

Once upon a time, EarthCube was supposed to do something like this. Then it just kind of became an organization that funnels NSF geoscience directory grant money to computer science researchers....

I'd also add that I've seen computer science people repeatedly come in, talk a big game, corner resources, and leave no real solution in earth science/computer science joint projects (e.g. EarthCube), so I tend to be very, very skeptical of their claims.

Like this is the National Research Enterprise-level equivalent of what CS used to do to any of the big collaborative efforys (e.g. Earthcube).

Unsettlingly so in fact.

That choice has to depend on the type of data, right? Here is an EarthCube list geocodes.earthcube.org#/about

Yep. EarthCube started out of UA several years before that.

I’m very techie and also very geo but I never learned anything about EarthCube. Sounds like one of those things that easily gets superseded by more mainstream tech advances…?

I thought earthcube was defunct? Haven't gotten email from them in a looooong time.

It's too bad, really. Went to one of their workshops and they had some great ideas to interface with/absorb marine geo data.
