Bringing Google Earth Engine to Your IDE!

GIS needs to be part of the modern AI development stack.
I built an Earth Engine extension to bring Google Earth Engine directly into VS Code, Cursor, Windsurf and other editors.

The finest sensor is not the best sensor. NAIP flies every two years over one country. MODIS has seen the whole Earth every day since 2000.

When dealing with high-resolution imagery, pixels aren't always enough. Compare Object-Based Image Analysis (OBIA) with traditional pixel-based classification workflows inside Google Earth Engine. Read the methodology comparison here.

Monitoring water quality parameters like turbidity and chlorophyll doesn't require constant field sampling. You can track algae blooms using satellite data via the GEE Python API.

A single satellite image only tells half the story. To track environmental changes effectively, we use time series analysis. Here is how to run it in Google Earth Engine.

An Earth Engine update: The resampling method for exporting floating point GeoTiff and COG images has changed to `CUBIC` from `NEAREST`. It's still `NEAREST` for integer images.

Earth Engine tip: use the Sentinel-2 SCL band to mask clouds and shadows before you composite. Garbage pixels in, garbage index out.

North Dakota's surface water, fire, and vegetation are coupled: change one and the others answer. I built an Earth Engine explorer over 2000 to 2024 to watch it happen.

#EOchat: Following the recent release of NASA / ISRO #NISAR 🛰️ data for *everywhere*, here's a sample viz of ascending orbit data from 28.06.2026 over #Belize. Forests are mainly displayed in shades of green, while non-forest areas are shown in darker tones. #EarthEngine #GoldenAgeOfSAR #ScienceSky

#EOchat: One of the things I'll always be fascinated by w/ #EarthEngine is the ability to rapidly pull wall-to-wall imagery from sources like #Landsat and use simple #ML to extract features like #LandCover. Kudos to the GEE team, b/c "no pixels were downloaded in the processing of this data." 😉

#EOchat / #GISchat: Did you miss last week's NASA #PACE Land data Users' Group (PLUG) meeting? 🤔 Fear not!

For #EarthEngine code to analyze #hyperspectral 🛰️ data for your area of interest, see: bit.ly/gee_repo_pac....

#EOchat / #GISchat: Are *YOU* interested in *free* NASA #hyperspectral 🛰️ data? Are you *also* a fan of #EarthEngine 💻? 🤔

If so, make sure you're #KeepingPACE by registering for the 2nd quarterly #PACE Land data Users' Group (PLUG) mtg next Tue 1st July.

I may be biased, but I think #EarthEngine ( #GEE ) is a great way to (1) access #Landsat + #Sentinel2 data *and* (2) integrate them both w/o having to download either. 😉 That said, I have not looked into #ODC as an alternative. 🤔 #EOchat

Are you at @agu.org's #AGU24? 🤔 If you're interested in hearing about how #SERVIR / UAH scientists are using #EarthEngine to bridge #LandCover monitoring and #OpenScience, come to the Google booth in the Exhibition Hall from 11:00-11:30 am today! 😉

Me? 🤔 Well BESIDES getting to see my fellow scientists after not attending AGU in-person since 2019, I'm *also* psyched about the cool #EarthEngine talks + demos that Google always musters for their @agu.org booths. You might even see a #Belizean scientist there [on Tuesday before noon]. 😉 #AGU24

7/n: In case you were wondering, a decade ago, the following was our [Landsat] processing workflow for generating forest cover data using desktop software.

We'll just say that using #EarthEngine has simplified the process, as well as the ready availability of processed BOA reflectance data.
