Am super pleased with myself for using ‘hegemony’ and ‘axiomatic’ and ‘discursive’, and referring to ecosemiotics, in my assignment this evening.
As well as many more wonderfully nerd rich things.

I am so glad I am studying art at long last.

Oh dear. I lasted until Sunday morning and I've just devoured a book on ecosemiotics.
I have given myself this weekend off. No emails, no sample knitting, no designing, no studying, no writing, and *crucially* no thinking about work.

So far I have just been curled up in a blanket and my god I needed that.

🌿 What do ecosystems and cultures have in common?
They both speak in meanings - and right now, we’re losing those meanings faster than ever.

On 2 Sept 2025, Estonian semiotician & poet Timo Maran is coming to @uio.no to talk about ecosemiotics.

#Ecosemiotics looks at how meaning is produced in and through ecological systems — how humans, animals, and environments communicate and shape each other.
It’s an interdisciplinary approach drawing from semiotics, ecology, and the environmental humanities.

Making is what I’ve been looking at, the embodied practice stuff. Am all about assemblages & new materialism & ecosemiotics in illustration. I don’t wanna be just making nice pictures.. I want to really demonstrate situational awareness.

Ecosemiotics looks at how life creates, maintains, and loses meaning - in both ecosystems and cultures.

Timo will share concepts like umwelt, semiotic ground, semiocide, and examples from creative projects in Tartu that bring science & culture together.
August 11, 2025 at 6:42 AM
The lecture will be followed by comments from Annelie Ott & Anna-Katharina Laboissiere.

Organized by COSER & OCEH at the University of Oslo.

🌱 Come in person or online - and bring your curiosity.

One my special interests this past few years has been ecosemiotics & now studying the illustration MA, multimodal semiotics has more grist than ever. I absolutely bubble over with enthusiasm thinking about how we interpret space, relationships, time.. it’s INCREDIBLY fascinating

Wonderful to see our Senior Lecturer in French and Comparative Literature Delphine Grass giving her exciting keynote lecture on translation, AI, ecosemiotics and biopolitics in Lisbon! Delphine's work explores how translation can help us explore our relationship to technology and to the environment.

“Ecosemiotics,” by Timo Maran

Perhaps we view Maran in the way we might view a Hebrew Testament prophet, as one who is telling us the awful truth while there is yet time to do something about it....
