This thing is so locked down, and the manuals are singularly unhelpful (Mitsubishi EcoDan btw). We had to reset the entire thing when our WiFi provider changed!
And yes, I am that person who’ll tweak the antifreeze setting so it starts lower than 5C so probably good it’s all locked down, to be fair…

The refrigerant charge of the unit shown in the image of the OP is 600 g, more than 5 times that limit. It’s still a relatively small unit too.

FWIW, back in December Mitsubishi contacted us about a problem with their Ecodan compressors which reduces efficiency and requires a software patch which they’d carry out on site free of charge, promised to schedule an engineer to fix it, but are now apparently ghosting us.

Public service announcement: Ovo's excellent offer of 15p/kWh for electricity your heat pump uses is still available for owners of Vaillant aroTHERM Plus and Viessmann Vitocal 150-A or 151-A air source heat pumps.

No longer available for Mitsubishi Ecodan owners, however 😞

Only a friend's Mitsubishi Ecodan, which was set in "auto-adapt" on day 1 and has never been touched since, seems set & forget

I feel like the controller may be where the problem lies. Because Ecodan doesn't do Opentherm the Nest just acts as an on/off, and all the HP can see is the target temp at the main controller, which is in a cupboard next to the unit, and therefore has to be set quite high to make sure it operates

Heat pump Q! I have an Ecodan 8.5kW. Flow temp set btw 30-35C. Occasionally pre-heat during night to use low Agile prices. Is there a way I can force it to use lower power and come to target temp more slowly? Appears to be trying to heat rapidly at high power. Have Nest thermostat E. Thanks!

Really interesting. Mitsubishi ecodan 8.5kW. Left of the line it's running in Auto Adapt mode with temperature differential turned off. Right of the line it's running with the flow temperature set to 33 (the target temp based on the curve and external conditions). Cycling at around 2 per hour.

I've been able to use @openenergymon.bsky.social to optimise the performance of my newly installed Ecodan 8.5kW during its first winter. Ecodan Auto Adaptive proving to produce better performance compared to pure weather comp during similar outside conditions.

I've heard good things about the Ecodan. Very happy with mine. Previously used a mix of pellet stove, log burners and oil boiler. Never had anything that could heat the place up so fast in winter! Especially if we'd been away for a few days.

Hallo Herr Hundhausen,

Danke!

Hello Max,

my installer does not have a clue how to feed electricity prices to the heat pump (Mitsubishi Ecodan) - he proposes Niko, Solar edge or home wizzard.

I just lack experience but variable prices in NL have huge volatility - in m opinion heat pumps need to work more when prices are low...

Hey Bluesky friends! Does anyone know about heat pumps? Anyone know why I can’t see any flow temps from my Ecodan? It seems to be struggling to reach temp & I probably need to adjust the compensation curve settings… 🙄

We have a Mitsubishi Ecodan 11kW fitted to a solid wall, 1910's semi detached in the West midlands, so, midlands-south. no internal or external insulation. Weather apps tell me its -3 as I write this.

Amazing report! Glad to see that we're doing everything right with ours, but the Ecodan would quite happily be topping up the last 10 deg all the time if we had left it. I guess the other factor is convenience though, having a tank "ready to go" would probably be preferable for most than a good COP?
