#Ecoliteracy
Ecoliteracy has never been in such short supply, nor so urgently needed as we transition to a new civilisation.

Today was a good day.

As part of our multi-year lake shoreline restoration project we planted a native species food forest with a class of grade 4 students eager to learn about watersheds and riparian ecosystems.

Ecoliteracy among youth while restoring degraded land.

A very good day.

6. Another big part of the problem is the media seemingly being allergic to female ecologists trying to spread eco literacy on this.
I pitched to write on this for the Guardian a few years ago because of all the media & NGO greenwashing, but they weren’t interested.

In conversation with an ecologist that's worked alongside the wild beaver reintroduction in #Scotland I got a strong message of establish good & appropriate riparian tree cover 1st, as existing wild beaver establishment will decimate your attempts.

Parallel forms of love are necessary now to resist any degenerative "leadership" in power.

Undermine their negatives by positive, local Ethics of Care, shared knowledge (ecoliteracy), and mutual aid.

I’m writing a research proposal related to ecoliteracy that I need humanity eyes on preferably from someone familiar with the literature. Anyone want to help me out? :)

🥳 It’s our book’s 4th birthday.
This one gives children a gentle introduction to wildlife adaptations and limitations in extreme weather and seasonal ecology, and helps children understand things they can do to help.

Suitable for 4-8 year olds.
It is a Guardian top pick.

Well, wouldn't it be lovely if PASSIVE solar was integral to all new designs. But that's not "GDP" focused. Ho hum. #ecoliteracy #RealAmbition #Architecture #SDG #UK #Governance #RIBA #BuildingControl
There's quite a nice pattern emerging where parts of the press get really angry about net zero, and then a day or two later the government just goes ahead and announces another ambitious climate policy. www.businessgreen.com/news/4413004...

Ministers expected to beef-up Future Homes Standard to ensure solar panels are installed on 99 per cent of new build homes from 2027

They just don't understand, I mean on a deep level. They aren't equipped, nor willing to change their value priorities. The Party mindset blocks them too. I think that a huge, deliberate ecoliteracy (educational) taskforce be set up for all representatives and civil servants. Even the basics!

I like how it looks like an actual European natural area and not a stereotype of a beachside forest. Well, aside from the weirdly incongruous magic Agave (which judging by context seems intended to be a wild plant and not something planted). Ecoliteracy has never been Alexis Kennedy's strong suit.

Yes indeed & “one populist rewilder” has expensive PR & media mates in all the right places who lack ecoliteracy & love clickbait.

I’m apparently the baddie for calling it out, so are several other real scientists.

Follow the money…
Like reintroductions, reinforcements only work when the drivers of species declines have been eliminated. One populist rewilder claims of 50K Water Vole releases; unlikely to be successful if these are not associated with long-term Mink control/eradication.
A project to protect river animals by eradicating mink has seen the East of England become the only place in Britain where water vole populations are increasing...

Advocating Ecoliteracy and Relational Fluency – Falling in Love Again with a Living World
The Earth is alive.
To be ecoliterate is to understand this interdependence; to practice relational fluency is to live it.

Not unimportant or “cute” (I’ve recently seen some harsh criticisms of posts that don’t address the climate crisis, other crises, etc), posts like this promote #ecoliteracy, an expanded Earth-centered vocabulary & can help bring back #lostwords.
The meanings of the word for a wren, from eight different languages...

8. Little walnut (Bulgarian)
7. Little bird in the ditch (Japanese)
6. Thumbling (Finnish)
5. Fence-skedaddler (Danish)
4. Fence-master (Hebrew)
3. Druid bird (Irish)
2. Mouse-brother (Faroese)

Ecoliteracy (best, shared knowledge & pedadogy/mentorship), listening, compassion (emotional awareness), safe refuge, wellbeing... as part of nature... means LOCAL practice, global accumulative effects/affects.

Yes. Though community care or a form of local, political love is also resistance.

It's not extraordinary. Quite the opposite.

Unless mass ecoliteracy is unleashed, value priorities will never change.

Most politicians simply do not understand beyond neoliberal economics & term of office.

This is extraordinary! The Government says it will expel MPs if they vote for the Climate & Nature Bill for the vital action to protect our environment—backed by thousands of scientists, NGOs, councils and businesses.

It should be a vote of conscience. What are they thinking??!

Yes, airport expansion on top! Starmer clearly doesn't understand interconnecdedness of humans as part of nature, nor the real value of ecoliteracy in general. If he did, as a critical moral agent, he'd calculate the risk of BAU as blatantly unacceptable.
Exactly - same goes for the planned expansion of the airports. The priority and focus is still economic expansion a la disaster capitalism. Hence arresting climate protesters, even before they have protested in some cases. Starmer doesn't want ecoliteracy.
