Antarctic Orca Ecotypes

I live in New Mexico, a weirdass state where the Great Plains runs into the Chihuahuan Desert runs into the Colorado Plateau and also there’s some mountains thrown in for fun. Like a dozen ecotypes run cheek by jowl, frequently a mile up. Ecoregions rarely divide super neatly so it’s a mishmash.

Darwin’s finches may not be separate species at all, but rather different “ecotypes” that express varying genetic memories.

This paper is making the rounds again!

Exciting update is we just got some funding to study caterpillar performance on local and nonlocal ecotypes! (Plant genotypes adapted to other ecoregions).

Stay tuned for more caterpillar pictures this summer! 🐛

Gene Expression Divergence Between Locally Adapted Inland Annual and Coastal Perennial Ecotypes of Mimulus guttatus Across Developmental Stages
The action of natural selection across heterogeneous natural landscapes drives local adaptation and the formation of plant ecotypes, the precursors to new species. Plant ecotypes typically differ sig...

Baby's first virginia native plants graduating from my aerogardens 🥹 black eyed susans (rudbeckia hirta)
Had a ton in FL and they reseed so much it's hilarious that I even have to grow any myself but you have to grow native plants from local ecotypes! FL ecotypes wouldnt live in VA

Chromosomal inversions are both engines of repeatability and innovation. They drive parallel genetic divergence between snail ecotypes across Europe, while also harbouring local variants that contribute to site-specific trait variations and adaptation:

Inversions support both parallel and location-specific adaptations in snail ecotypes

Are these the same or different species? Remarkably, these stick insects can flip between two ecotypes after just a few generations — far shorter than the typically lengthy course of natural selection. www.quantamagazine.org/how-ecotypes...

Independent genetic differentiation between upland and lowland rice ecotypes within japonica and indica subspecies during their adaptations to different soil‐nitrogen conditions
The upland and lowland rice ecotypes were adapted to agroecosystems with contrasting soil-nitrogen conditions. Upland and lowland ecotypes are independently differentiated within japonica and indica ...

Speciation isn’t clean-cut. Evolutionary biologists increasingly view it as a continuum, rather than a process with discrete steps. There is a gray area between species. That’s where ecotypes come into play. Tune in to The Quanta Podcast:

How do you define a species? The question has been controversial since the days of Darwin. Recent advances in genomics have both clarified and complicated the picture. www.quantamagazine.org/how-ecotypes...

Non-invasive profiling of the tumour microenvironment with spatial ecotypes - Nature
Multimodal machine learning reveals that tumour microenvironments can be decomposed into spatially organized multicellular ecosystems, termed spatial ecotypes, that can be accessed non-invasively via liquid biopsy and used to profile individual cancers and target treatments.

Ecotypes of triple-negative breast cancer in response to chemotherapy - Nature
Treatment data for triple-negative breast cancer show the importance of macrophage subtypes and cancer-cell metaprograms for interferon signalling, HLA expression and cell cycle activity that are associated with a good response to neoadjuvant chemotherapy.
