A school of juvenile bar jacks chafes against a pregnant Caribbean reef shark, dislodging loose scales and ectoparasites.

On this reef, I observed three different species using sharks’ skin as a chafing tool — an underappreciated aspect of sharks’ ecological function.

June's #insertaninvert2024 theme is parasites. First off: ectoparasites. Louse-herder's going to need some fresher pasture for his flock.

Fantastic example of sunning behaviour. Nothing like some intense UV to get rid of pesky ectoparasites like lice! #birds

"Birds may pick up new or drop off existing ectoparasites, such as ticks, during stopover, acting as a long-distance dispersal mechanism for ectoparasites and their pathogens." The most common parasitized birds were the hooded warblers (31%) and swamp sparrows (16%).

Wild boars (Sus scrofa) often return to certain “rubbing trees” after wallowing in mud, likely for skin care, reducing ectoparasites, and scent marking. While we sleep, the forest is active.

Some birds have claws adapted and modified to "comb" their feathers (pectinate claw), this helps them get rid of ectoparasites.

Here I decided to use my creativity and imagine a therizinosaur with something similar in the claws of its hands

Having lots of body hair makes it harder for biting insects such as mosquitos and other ectoparasites to bite you and it also work as an alarm. There are even science papers documenting this.

This is bad. Google's "Books" tab is still up, but all searches return the same "there aren't any 'Books' matches" response

So I just went for a walk and realized: Elkads need parasites! Ones that match their grotesquerie. So I'm going with a leech analog not unlike the Hippo arse leech Placobdelloides jaegerskioeldi in their larval stage, maturing into something like Sacculina barnacles (castrating crab ectoparasites).

Megafauna disperse pathogens and ectoparasites. The End Pleistocene megafaunal extinctions led to an 85% reduction of pathogen dispersal, causing surviving species to become immunonaieve. This led to the rise of zoonotic disease and epizootics 🧪

Works for other animals, too. Great for bumping off ectoparasites as well. Wonder if it works on politicians?
