#edchatie Great letter in @irishtimes.com today re: the ongoing teacher shortage
“The teacher shortage does not require further discovery. It requires political decisions, some of them expensive, some difficult & some considerably less comfortable than commissioning another report.”

Yes indeed, how will schools bring children’s 200 home languages into classrooms when there is an MFL teacher shortage? Also, our primary teacher colleagues in Ireland already have enough to be doing what with oversized classes & an overburdened curriculum! 🤨

Delighted to have this op-ed published in today's @irishtimes.com. The vindication of children's rights should not rely on volunteerism along. It's time for investment and political leadership to rebalance our education system. #equality #inclusion #edchatie www.irishtimes.com/opinion/2026...
Ireland’s approach to religious-run schools is breaching constitutional rights of many families
If we are serious about every child feeling a sense of belonging in school this needs investment and political leadership

You know it’s mid August when articles like this appear. Teaching profession would be more attractive if permanent, full hour 2nd level contracts were available. Why doesn’t TUI fight for this? Many teachers out there struggling to secure decent contracts, subbing and scrabbling for hours. #edchatie
TUI calls for jobs of full hours, less admin workload, incremental credit for those returning from overseas and a reinstatement of allowances that were previously payable for SEN qualification, teaching through Irish and teaching on an island.

RTÉ News: Primary school hours should remain but more breaks needed, says Committee Chair

Finally, some level of common sense is being spoken about the school day. The pressure to cover content and initiatives is immense, to the point that we have to ask what are we doing things for? #edchatie
