Out from the darkness comes a low gurgle akin to a deep, guttural growl, followed by a sound like something pushing and shifting through dense, wet leaves. The little pinprick candles suddenly loom closer, and when they edge close enough to the moonlight for you to make out a face, you scream. What you thought were flames are actually the red pupils of wide, insect-like black eyes, set deep into the withered, corrupted face of what appears to be a giantess. The skin is stretched tight over the skull, giving her a gaunt appearance reminiscent of a corpse. Its nose is slender and snake-like, its mouth thin and gray-lipped and drawn, and splatters of black chitinous plates erupt through the pallid flesh on its emaciated cheeks and jaws. Hanks of long, matted white hair are twisted into buns around a tarnished golden crown. Its heavy laurels are shaped like upturned ram’s horns, their spirals interwound with withered black vines. The giantess’s head leans toward you on a long, sinewy neck that stretches out much, much further than it should. It’s the Emperor—the Hegemon Husk. And if that’s her, that means your captor is none other than the Ashen Demon.

It could have been no time at all with how Rhea looks. She is clad simply in a floor-length white gown—Edelgard remembers her outfitted in ostentation, in the headdress and mantle and jewelry of her office or in the winged helm of a statue—but apart from her humble state of dress, the Archbishop is still as youthful and beautiful as in Edelgard’s memory. Even her hair scarcely seems longer, flowing over her bust and down her back in cascades of celestial green, adorned with a single lily near her temple. And her eyes, with their lucent green irises and otherworldly depths—they are exactly the same as they have appeared in Edelgard’s unending visions and nightmares ever since the second coming of the darkness. Were Edelgard slightly more dazed, had her overgrown claws not curled inextricably into the few sad remnants of her sanity, were she merely anyone else, Edelgard might believe the pretender for the saint. But she is just herself enough to remember well what Rhea is.
