To support using this data, we have also developed an #EdgeBundling tool to aid in visualising complex origin-destination flow data:

Edge bundling is a technique where lines going to similar directions are bundled together to improve visual clarity and reduce clutter in visualisations. The left image shows 2 million flows going across Europe and looks like a green hairy ball, whereas the right image shows the same data bundled together to improve visual interpretability.

Edge connections used to be first come first served, now they are ordered by which node is closest so there are less crossings. Next: edgebundling to get rid of remaining crossings.
