Is the Ubiquiti Dream Machine still best set up for a home network?
- Good UI/UX is important
- 2Gbps Internet
- Cat 6 in the walls
- Need PoE for cameras
- I'm too dumb to run EdgeRouter. I did for years and hated it
- I do have WiFi 7 devices and two spots to ceiling mount APs
- Lots of devices
- Good UI/UX is important
- 2Gbps Internet

Is the Ubiquiti Dream Machine still best set up for a home network?

After a long evening of rewiring my network.. the cast-off EdgeRouter I inherited is implemented. Next is to figure out VLANS & actually use the managed switch for what it was designed for hehe.
After that, roll out a PiHole :3

til there’s a usb stick inside my home router that contains its boot partition
til sometimes this usb stick will fail and will need to be replaced
at least the bootloader will partition it for me if i upload a recovery image over tftp >_<

Poking around with an EdgeRouter X and it's made me realize how much I'm out of practice on lots of tech things and network in general and rn it's all going woosh.

Poking around with an EdgeRouter X and it's made me realize how much I'm out of practice on lots of tech things and network in general and rn it's all going woosh.
It's been DUE that I take the time to try the different types of QoS that both my edgerouter 4 and my managed switch. Starting by my Edgerouter 4, I've always read about bufferbloat and whatnot. While it's capable of speeds and all of that. It sucks with QoS.

I run an EdgeRouter Lite, gen 1 CloudKey, EdgeSwitch 16 POE, and Unifi Wireless N and G access points. All ancient, all doing well enough to meet my needs. 😡

Picked up a Unifi Dream Router 7. My EdgeRouter X has been rock solid for 10 years but it's time for an upgrade.

A shoutout to one of my favourite bits of tech. My old UniFi Edgerouter X.
Fiddly to set up. Now just runs and runs. Networking issues are never this appliance. The internet connection is slow so its bandwidth limits make no difference. Never needs rebooting.
This thing brings me joy.
