DYK #EdithWharton’s 1905 “House of Mirth” described the destruction an upper-class woman w/o property, such as Lily Bart, might meet if she did not marry into her class? By 1920, modern marriage was more about love than #dowry. Yet in 1923, a NJ court upheld #coverture.
