Pet coverture. Well developed doctrine. Dogs and cats pulled into the whirlwind too. But not like lizards or ferrets or other weird pets.

It's why women's history is not a month, anymore than Black history is. It *is* the history.

**Here's a short recent thing I wrote about coverture. With references to some sources of course bc #footnotes. 6// karinwulf.com/tidbits/cove...

The discussion of coverture was likely intended to serve this purpose, but it fails to convey how it left women vulnerable to physical & sexual abuse & only hints at its role in enabling pervasive economic exploitation.

Coverture - which comes from the word "cover" - is the legal doctrine that when a man and woman marry, they become one flesh, and that one is the man. We see coverture all the time in period films like Pride & Prejudice. But did you know it also shows up in the Dick Van Dyke show?

Pleased to see this volume on married women & the law now out - the product of a great conference on coverture organized by Danaya Wright. (Rather pricey, but good for the library-wishlist!) #earlymodern #history www.cambridgescholars.com/product/978-...

i loooove how obvious it is that DJT's "team" did zero research on JDV, and now we get the slow rollout of the 5000 nutjob podcasts he was on last year proclaiming the need to reinstate coverture, revoke the 14th & 19th amendments, and ban rated-R movies and liquor

Reformer Josephine Butler (1828-1906, b. Northumberland), died on this day 1906. Arguably most effective campaigner for women’s rights of her time. She ended coverture (whereby woman’s legal rights were subsumed by her husband’s), criminalised child prostitution and human trafficking.

Let's get down to real originalism: Coverture.
Trump minimizes domestic abuse during a talk at the Museum of the Bible: "Things that take place in the home, they call crime ... If a man has a little fight with the wife, they say this was a crime, see?"

No Black scholar is ever enmeshed in an institution that way. Don’t get institutional coverture because we are never really “of” the institution. Some Black elites get close if they toe the line but definitely not anyone from outside of it, like Arday. Or me.

Why not just reinstate coverture?
As predicted, women in New Hampshire had a hard time voting yesterday because of the new proof of citizenship law:

“It doesn’t have my married name on it,” she said. Town voting officials then sent her away a second time, to get her marriage certificate.

NH’s new ID requirements send some would-be voters home to grab passports, birth certificates
The law requires all new voters to show proof of their U.S. citizenship. For some, that meant making multiple trips to and from the polls before finally casting a ballot on Tuesday.

The name for this is "coverture" and it was a principle of common law for so long that it became taken as read without ever having to be stated out loud.

The principle of coverture (in which a woman's legal identity is subsumed by her husband's) is remarkably pernicious.

Some sort of women's coverture theory no doubt.
