I find some governors really struggle to understand their role - effective & ongoing training & development is important to help them fully embrace their strategic contribution to leadership and avoid getting bogged down in the operational. #EffectiveGovernance

So important to set out expectations at the start. Induction training, code of conduct, org. values, Nolan principles - none should be in any doubt. Then there is everything in place against which to measure behaviours. #EffectiveGovernance

However still a concept from capitalism/corporate world but has merit is describing the breadth of relationships a board must form and the various constituencies it must consider (I don't want to say represent) in its discussions and decisions. #EffectiveGovernance

Important to allow them to do it their way - beware the "I couldn't step up to chair because I couldn't do all that the retiring chair does" - change can be good for boards! #EffectiveGovernance

Try to keep an open mind - be objective. Challenge our own assumptions. As governors we need to see the big picture - judgements might see us close down our thinking or get stuck in the detail. #EffectiveGovernance

We had a really interesting in-depth discussion at a board meeting last term about Covid 4 years on - it's a really important issue for boards to ask about. #UKEdGovs I will be raising Year 5 at our upcoming standards meeting too! #EffectiveGovernance
