#Effelsberg
Effelsberg is a very fine radio telescope. :)

What if I told you that the most profound secrets of our universe aren't hidden in the visible light we see, but in the invisible radio waves washing over us every second? As an optical engineer who…

you can go for a walk around the base of the big dish. there are posters along the way explaining things, including why you should go on airplane mode while you are there.

I‘ve never made it to Arecibo.

I grew up close to the 100m Effelsberg telescope in Germany and was always hugely impressed about the size of that metal bowl, especially when it started moving.

JAXA has the 64 m at Usuda.

And the larger radio observatories (GBT, Jodrell, Effelsberg, etc.) can be retasked for spacecraft receive - but that involves swapping in receivers and a lot of other work.

A wonderful BioLabs #Betriebsausflug this year! We enjoyed a hike, visited the impressive Effelsberg Radio Telescope, and wrapped up the day with a picnic and great conversations. Fantastic to see so many colleagues from the department join. Already looking forward to next year's outing!

Had a dream last night in which I was frantically looking through a copy of Kraus' "Radio Astronomy" textbook trying to find a picture of the Effelsberg radio telescope.

I have no idea why.....

The german dish. I saw it move: butterflies in my stomach.

Show me your favorite #science themed coffee (or tea) #cup. This here is mine. I got it many years ago from my institute (maybe for the 40th anniversary of the Effelsberg radio telescope).
