Mark Foley, former EirGrid CEO said Ireland’s digital sector is facing an “existential crisis” and data centres should connect to the gas network to generate energy on-site without delay.

If only this sector was the only thing facing an existential crisis...

A sunny Monday, and EirGrid's dashboard showing a new all-island solar high: 1402MW ☀️

However, it's too close to call: as our charts show, spikes in real-time data are often later revised down and/or disappear with downsampling.

Record or not, it's great to see such highs well into the autumn! ☀️

EirGrid predicts that data centres will be using 31% of all the electricity consumed in the country by 2034, median-growth scenario.

It was 22% in 2024.

The Eirgrid dashboard now shows daily solar generation. Four years ago, this would have been a flat line.

This doesn't even include rooftop solar which reduces the demand on the grid.

"Electricity demand from data centres has grown from 5% of national electricity demand in 2015 to 22% in 2024.

According to Eirgrid, by 2034, it is expected that this, along with any other new technology-related energy drains, will rise to 34% of electricity demand." Source: @thejournal.ie
So, we can completely miss our climate targets but continue to build these energy sucking monstrosities. This needs to be stopped. Little to no employment, massive quantities of land and ridiculous damage to our air, water and habitats. #SpeirGorm
Minister for Enterprise Peter Burke will this morning bring a major plan to build more data centres across the country to Cabinet for sign off.

Irish grid operator EirGrid:

Half of Ireland’s total electricity demand met by renewables December 2024.
Renewables met 46.7% Ireland’s total system demand in Dec, 41.4% from wind power.
Wind energy at 1,287GWh.

"EirGrid is pausing elements of the work required to change operational policy which is necessary to integrate more renewables on the electricity system."

CRU clearly stating that data centre demand on the grid is directing capacity away from decarbonisation (and cheaper household bills).
This is a significant move by the CRU and shows the risks of embedding data centres further into our grid.

The response by the industry also highlights that tech companies are not 'good energy citizens' that will provide public services for free. 1/2

Stats from Eirgrid Dashboard today here in Ireland - very low generation from the ~5GW installed wind turbine capacity.

Solar peaked at 1030MW & outproduced wind turbines between 07:00 & 18:45.

Renewable generation and discharging storage equalled 72% of yesterday's electricity demand, with a peak of 81% at 04:45. Fossil fuel generation (mostly gas) equalled 31% of demand. 3% of generation was exported, 0% of demand was met by imports.
September 30, 2026 at 6:33 AM
Earlier this month, output from solar farms started exceeding 1GW for the first time.

Yesterday, we saw another important record set: around 1pm, solar output was equal to almost a quarter of the island's electricity demand.

So close!

We were headed for full, unbroken 7 days of renewable generation meeting the majority of electricity demand - but the streak broke this morning.

BUT, renewables met 75% of electricity demand Monday-Friday: very rare over 5 consecutive days and something we haven't seen since late 2023.

EirGrid released their January report. For anyone wondering why our figures differ so much: looks like EirGrid mixed all-island wind numbers with (incorrect) ROI demand numbers to calculate their wind/demand ratio 🙃

Again: January wind generation equalled 32.6% of all-island demand (33.3% in ROI).

🚨 Yesterday afternoon, wind power reached a new high on the island of Ireland: 4686MW, equal to 73.5% of electricity demand and 66.8% of total generation at the time.

The previous record which stood for just over two years has now been broken twice already this winter 🥇

🚨 A historic double-header for the Irish grid today with two major records broken:
- this morning, battery discharge reached almost 500MW, or roughly 8% of electricity demand 🔋
- just after 12pm, solar output exceeded 1GW (roughly 20% of demand) for the very first time ☀️

Much more to come!

For the first time, Ireland generated more electricity from renewable sources than fossil fuels in the first half of the year 🍃

The chart below makes the trend clear. Will 2026 be the first year with majority clean energy? We at Green Collective hope to be the first to report it!
