There is a need to review the rights of employees when it comes to employers using electronic monitoring and other means to track workers. This happens at the work place, in the privacy of worker's homes and also as they go about their private lives. #dataprivacy #electronicmonitoring

This represents an initial or first use of GPS tagging & tracking, which was debated in-depth in the passing of Management of Offenders (Scotland) Act 2019.

Prior to now, it has just been radio frequency tagging used in Scotland since 2002 (well, first piloted in 1999). #ElectronicMonitoring (🧵/2)

Winnipeg Police Question Effectiveness of Ankle Monitors After Break-Ins
Two men accused of breaking and entering and stealing approximately $140,000 worth of items in Winnipeg and Headingley were detained after being ordered to wear ankle monitors as part of their bail conditions. Experts are now questioning the effectiveness of such electronic monitoring devices, with University of Winnipeg Criminal Justice professor Michael Weinrath stating there is no guarantee suspects will not reoffend. The province reported that 60% of individuals under ankle monitor supervision were rearrested in October 2025, and there are currently 194 monitors in use across the region. While monitoring devices track location via GPS and alert authorities to prohibited areas, critics argue they do little to prevent criminal activity. The case highlights ongoing debates about the role of electronic monitoring in justice systems, balancing public safety with individual freedoms.
