Zinc Whiskers: The Hidden Contamination Risk Beneath Data Center Floors
As data centers evolve to support higher-density computing and AI infrastructure, attention naturally goes to power, cooling, and equipment reliability. A less visible issue also deserves attention in that discussion: zinc whiskers. The risk isn’t new, but the operating conditions inside today’s facilities – especially increases in airflow – make it worth revisiting. Zinc whiskers are microscopic, electrically conductive crystalline filaments that can grow from electroplated zinc surfaces. In data centers, the best-documented source is the underside of older raised-floor tiles. However, cable trays, pedestals, stringers, electrical hardware, and other zinc-plated components can also be susceptible. The risk arises when whiskers detach, become airborne, and are carried by the cooling airflow. Once inside equipment, they can settle on circuit boards and other components, potentially creating unintended conductive paths, signal disturbances, and equipment failures. A Risk Hidden in Legacy Infrastructure Whiskers can be difficult to identify without the appropriate inspection techniques, and growth may take months or years to become apparent. The risk is particularly relevant to older facilities and buildings with mixed-vintage infrastructure. also most 'citrine' you find is actually amethyst they baked until it turned yellow, it's very hard to find natural citrine for sale

Peck is well known for his incredible one of a kind brutalist jewelry, and he also received acclaim for his decorative objects including jewelry boxes and bowls. His work was included in the exhibition and book, "Objects: USA" (1970), and in numerous other exhibitions and gallery shows of the time. Along with Stanley Lechtzin, the artist was one of the foremost practitioners of electroplating as an art form of his era. See my two additional photos for a peek inside the box, and an original leaflet by Peck about the materials used and importantly the care of his boxes with original 70s art! (Electroplated items are fragile and can be easily damaged by over-zealous cleaning!) A unique one of a kind vintage 1970s handmade mixed metals bronze with gold and silver electroplated brutalist modernist fish pendant by American metalsmith/sculptor Lee Barnes Peck of Illinois. Hand crafted by the artist with a hand carved wax casting that is then 'painted' in various colors of metal via the electroplating technique and oxidized black in sections as well! Peck is well known for his incredible one of a kind brutalist jewelry, and he also received acclaim for his decorative objects including jewelry boxes and bowls. His work was included in the book, "Objects: USA" (1970), and in numerous exhibitions and gallery shows of the time. Along with Stanley Lechtzin, the artist was one of the foremost practitioners of electroplating as an art form of his era. This is a great example of his brutalist jewelry and objects in mixed metals! Would look great hung on a neckring, on a chain, or even on an informal black cord. I can include a cord at no extra charge if desired, just let me know when making the purchase. The pendant is hand-fabricated in bronze and electroplated with sterling silver and two shades of gold over parts of the body of the fish and contrasted with a black oxidation in parts as well. Peck made a series of 'fish' jewelry over the years. Each are unique, one of a kind, and entirely hand-crafted! Measures 1-1/2" by 1-1/8" and weighs 0.3 ounce or roughly 9 grams total. Marked at back as shown, "Lee Peck". Excellent vintage condition.
