"The central problem is not the pace at which renewables are being added, but the social & economic system that determines trajectories of global energy use.

A real transition can only happen through the rapid & permanent reduction in the absolute consumption of coal, oil & gas..."

Great chart, but one thing that it misses, are the coal reserves, which when unchecked, will surely create more electrostates and yet warm the planet.

Petrostates versus electrostates…
I love this slide. I really don't think the geopolitical implications of the clean energy transition have sunk in for most people.

It’s not an ecomomic crisis that is looming - it is a fossil fuel induced economic crisis. China is demonstrating now that being on the way to being an #Electrostate immunizes against the worst effects. Future crises will be very different, more harmless for Electrostates.

"Let's electrify" war der Ausruf von Ursula von der Leyen am Ende des Kapitels zu Energie und Klima. Aus meiner Sicht ergibt sich daraus eine Art Vision für die EU als "Commonwealth of Electrostates" - es ist an der Zeit, dass auch Deutschland sich klar dazu bekennt, #Elektrostaat werden zu wollen.

A potential China-Europe energy entente represents a shifting geopolitical order where China functions as the world's first electrostate — replacing fossil fuels with massive electrification — while Europe seeks rapid decarbonization.

The EU in a Petrostates and Electrostates World
In a world increasingly shaped by US-China energy bipolarity, the EU must reduce its strategic vulnerability to both fossil-fuel exporters and clean-technology powers by recalibrating its regulatory a...

Dispatches from the new ecological Cold War of electrostates v petrostates — as with the first Cold War, this one also centers on the choices of middle powers and the Global South.
Today on Volts: in 2008, physics professor Ramón Méndez Galain was made energy minister of Uruguay. Over the next 7 years, he led the country to a 98% carbon-free electricity system. With his nonprofit, Ivy, he's now attempting to export the model to other countries in the global South. We discuss.
He helped Uruguay decarbonize. Can he help other countries do the same?
A conversation with Ramón Méndez Galain.

Is the U.S. becoming a "petrostate" and China an "electrostate"? Scott M. Moore argues the dichotomy is overstated, but warns China's dominance in EVs and clean tech could still give it a lasting edge as global demand shifts.

Scott Moore explores the electro-state vs. petrostate narrative of China and the U.S. While electr0-state overstates China's current direction, China has insulated itself from the oil shock of the Iran War and positioned itself well for the future. www.brookings.edu/articles/ele...

‘European theorists of green modernity were in a sense unaware of the geopolitical frame that sat so comfortably around them, and allowed them to relatively easily ignore the questions which are now so painfully inescapable.’
