Zooey Deschanel revealed that her decision to dye her hair blonde for the 2003 film 'Elf' stemmed from an audition for a pop star role akin to Britney Spears. During a 2026 interview on The Zach Sang Show, she recounted how she underwent a dramatic transformation for a screen test that never materialised. The producers, aiming to create a pop star archetype, dyed her hair blonde, added extensions, and gave her a tan, effectively turning her into a 'pop star' for the project. However, the film did not proceed, leaving her with the blonde look. When she auditioned for 'Elf', the producers insisted she retain the same appearance, resulting in her iconic blonde portrayal. Deschanel clarified that the change was not her choice but a creative directive, highlighting the serendipitous nature of her career path. She later became a pop star in her own right through her duo She & Him, whose 2010 album 'Volume Two' reached number six on the Billboard 200. Her role in 'Elf' also included singing the song 'Baby, It’s Cold Outside', further cementing her presence in popular culture. The article also touches on her reflections on another notable role in '500 Days of Summer', where she faced criticism for the character's portrayal.
