A Cretaceous lungfish tooth plate of a Neoceratodus africanus or Ceratodus sp. from the Elrhaz Formation in Gadoufaoua, Niger. These giant Mesozoic lungfish would have been prey for genera like Suchomimus and Sarcosuchus. #FossilFriday

the african s. imperator is the larger and more famous of the two species, and was found in the elrhaz formation of niger, where it coexisted with the spinosaurid suchomimus and the hadrosauriform ouranosaurus, among others

Ouranosaurus.

An iguanodontid with a strange like hump that was discovered in the Elrhaz Formation in what's now West Africa, and lived during the early Cretaceous.

A dinosaur tooth of an indeterminate theropod, likely a carcharodontosaurid from the Elrhaz Formation in Gadoufaoua, Niger. While it is possibly Eocarcharia dinops, it likely belongs to a much larger species. #FossilFriday

Ouranosaurus nigeriensis!

A truly beautiful and unusual Ornithopod from Elrhaz Formation, notable for its distinct “sailback” appearance. I went all out with the coloration on this guy, using zebra as a reference for the stripes.

Indeed, the wider palaeofauna of the Elrhaz Formation, Niger suggests a fluvial environment with an abundance of large fish and the presence of the spinosaurid dinosaur, #Suchomimus - another specialist piscivore, further supports this area as a good place for fish eaters.

This system is dubbed the Paleo-Tegama river system after the Tegama Group of Niger. This would suggest that the Continental Intercalaire are part of the same river system as the famous Elrhaz and Echkar Formations, which were famously home to many croc species

A dinosaur tooth of an indeterminate theropod, possibly a carcharodontosaurid from the Elrhaz Formation in Gadoufaoua, Niger. This odd looking tooth morphology could be related to the Cenomanian Tameryraptor markgrafi. #FossilFriday

including but not limited to Sarcosuchus, Stolokrosuchus and Anatosuchus at Elrhaz & Kaprosuchus, Elosuchus, Laganosuchus and Fortignathus (another possible itasuchid?) at Echkar
And of course Araripesuchus at both

A dinosaur tooth of an indeterminate spinosaurid, likely Suchomimus tenerensis from the Elrhaz Formation in Gadoufaoua, Niger. While it is likely Suchomimus, it lacks fluting typically seen in baryonychine teeth.

A dinosaur jaw of an iguanodont, likely an Ouranosaurus nigeriensis or Lurdusaurus arenatus from the Elrhaz Formation in Gadoufaoua, Niger. The fossil is worn from exposure to the harsh environment. #FossilFriday

A dinosaur tooth, possibly Kryptops palaios from the Elrhaz Formation in Gadoufaoua, Niger. Although this type of abelisaurid teeth is often labeled as Kryptops, the morphology does not quite match the holotype. #FossilFriday

A dinosaur tooth of a Suchomimus tenerensis from the Elrhaz Formation in Gadoufaoua, Niger. The contemporary spinosaurid, Cristatusaurus lapparenti may or may not be synonymous with this species. #FossilFriday

A crocodylomorph tooth of a Sarcosuchus imperator from the Elrhaz Formation in Gadoufaoua, Niger. Often referred to as the "super croc", this genus was not a true crocodilian; it also did not live with Spinosaurus as commonly portrayed in media.

So, on Suchomimus... why do you think the clade uniting the younger Weald Baryonychines with the big Elrhaz fella got named Ceratosuchopsini rather than Suchomimini? This has been known to be a potential issue for decades.

There's so many options, here's what I settled on:

Cage Diving - Toolebuc Formation Australia: Kronosaurus
Bug Catching - Commentry Shales France: Meganeura
Birding - New Zealand: Giant Moa
Herping - Burgersdorp Formation South Africa: Euparkeria
Photo Safari - Elrhaz Formation Niger: Ouranosaurus

A crocodylomorph tooth, likely an Elosuchus cherifiensis from the Gara Sbaa Formation, Kem Kem Group in Iferda N'Ahouar, Morocco, otherwise known as "Area 13". These Kem Kem crocs are commonly mistaken for Sarcosuchus from the older Elrhaz Formation.

In any case, Sarcosuchus was certainly big enough to make a meal of unwary dinosaurs!
All in all, the abundance of predatory dinosaurs & other #crocodyliforms besides Sarcosuchus, made the Elrhaz a risky place to linger beside a river in the Early Cretaceous.

🧵 End.
