Umweltkatastrophe befürchtet: Containerschiff mit gefährlicher Ladung sinkt vor indischer Küste Am 25. Mai 2025 ereignete sich vor der Küste des indischen Bundesstaats Kerala ein schwerer Schiffsunfall: Das unter liberianischer Flagge fahrende Containerschiff MSC Elsa 3 sank im Arabischen Meer. An Bord befanden sich 640 Container, darunter 13 mit gefährlicher Ladung und zwölf mit Calciumcarbid, einem in der Chemieindustrie verwendeten Stoff. Zudem hatte das Schiff etwa 85 Tonnen Diesel und 367 Tonnen Schweröl in seinen Tanks. Die Besatzung, bestehend aus 24 Seeleuten aus Georgien, Russland, der Ukraine und den Philippinen, konnte rechtzeitig evakuiert und gerettet werden. Die indische Marine und Küstenwache sind im Einsatz, um das ausgetretene Öl einzudämmen und die Umweltverschmutzung zu minimieren. Ein Flugzeug verteilt ein spezielles Pulver zur Zersetzung des Öls. Die Behörden haben eine hohe Alarmstufe für die Küstengebiete ausgerufen und die Bevölkerung aufgefordert, sich von angeschwemmten Containern fernzuhalten. Fischer wurden gewarnt, sich der Unglücksstelle nicht zu nähern. Die Ursache des Unglücks ist bislang unklar. Allerdings wurde bekannt, dass die MSC Elsa 3 in den vergangenen Jahren bei Hafenstaatkontrollen wiederholt Mängel aufwies, darunter Probleme an Hilfsmaschinen, elektrischen Systemen, Rettungsbooten und Löschvorrichtungen. Das Schifffahrtsunternehmen MSC ist in den letzten Monaten bereits mehrfach durch Zwischenfälle aufgefallen. So kam es unter anderem zu Problemen mit den Schiffen MSC Baltic III, MSC Houston V, MSC Talia F und MSC Antonia. Die indischen Behörden und Umweltschützer befürchten eine Umweltkatastrophe, sollte das ausgelaufene Öl und die gefährliche Ladung die empfindlichen Ökosysteme der Region erreichen. Die Situation wird weiterhin genau beobachtet.

The Kerala coast was located on high readiness after eight containers of the MSC Elsa3 found on the coast of Kollam on Monday 26, which sank in Kochi on Saturday, Kochi on Saturday, May 24. Local coastal authorities were recommended to avoid touching these containers while fishermen were asked to not break the sea. Moreover, the inhabitants in the Kollam area were encouraged to move to safer places.
