So, I looked into the spec last night, and my first impressions were "this is about DC" too, but the spec seems to say otherwise - I've linked to the key part. I think the goal is AC and DC support, via newer solid state power electronics.

I have missed that, thanks! I hope that something viable comes out of this eventually. The Energy Protocol spec has not been touched for 9 months, but maybe they will update once there are field results. I guess that there are more similar projects ongoing.
