Sword-billed Hummingbird (Ensifera ensifera): Hummingbirds have the largest comparative heart size of any bird in the world. Terrific photo taken by Alfonso Cortez in Ecuador. #bird #SwordBilledHummingbird #wildlife #hummingbird #ecuador #nature

For @helenbennett.bsky.social's #BirdOfTheDay theme, #BestBeaks, the ultimate bird bill - the javelin sported by Sword-billed Hummingbird. This outrageous bird was one I met some years ago on my travels in South America when researching what would become The Glitter in the Green.

My favorite hummer shot is a sword-billed hummingbird (Ensifera ensifera). I captured this during a lunch break in Yanacocha, Ecuador.

I've not contributed to the ongoing #BirdOfTheDay themes here before, but being as I know a thing or two about bearing a big nose, today's the day to start, with #LongBeaks, and a Sword-billed Hummingbird I found in Colombia a few years ago.

A cricket or katydid nymph (Orthoptera: Ensifera) hiding from my attempts to photograph it just before sunset. Crickets and katydids can be distinguished from grasshoppers thanks to their long antennae. Grasshoppers (Orthoptera: Caelifera) have short antennae. Blissfield Michigan, 02 Jul 2025.

getting my name change in today and I'm still brainstorming middle names

specifically I want something stupidly over-the-top high fantasy bc of how important that genre is to me

currently considering 'Ensifera' but I'm open to ideas

Tettigoniidae is a family of Orthoptera commonly known as katydids in North America and bush crickets in British English. They belong to the suborder Ensifera, making them closely related to crickets. 🧪

Sword-billed Hummingbird (Ensifera ensifera) in Colombia by Miguel San Martín Wildlife Photography. At around four inches, or ten centimeters, its bill is almost the same length as its head, body, and tail combined! That’s the largest bill in proportion to its body of any bird.
