The UK government has ruled out stepping in to save two of the country’s key bioethanol producers, Vivergo Fuels and Ensus, from closure — after signing a trade deal allowing US ethanol to flood the British market.
Government walks away from British bioethanol industry hit by Trump trade deal
Bioethanol producers Vivergo Fuels and Ensus are both on the brink of collapse, but the government says it won’t step in.

This plant was closed thanks to last year’s trade deal with Trump. Now the government is forced to reopen it because of Trump’s war on Iran.

A lesson - any deal with Trump only undermines our resilience and security.

The US-UK trade deal has removed 19% tariffs from American Bioethanol (produced from Corn) imports to the UK.

I mean, this would be OK if imports gradually decrease due to electrification.

UK ethanol is produced from Feed Wheat (Ensus) and Sugar Beet (ABF).

path for sure. It’s good to see the Wilton plant reopening after it closed because of a trade deal with 🇺🇸 iirc.

(2) Vivergo & Ensus lobbied successfully for 10% ethanol blends in UK, even though UK is more and more often a net importer of wheat. #Biofuels are fundamentally the wrong solution to transport emissions!
August 17, 2025 at 6:59 PM
And of course, the solutions proposed by Ensus and ABF to preserve the 6000 jobs in the #bioethanol supply chain are another panic move, rather than the kind of change that would normally be negotiated and thought through over time.

Crisis at Teesside Bioethanol Plant
Recent US-UK trade deal allows US bioethanol manufacturers greater access to UK market, causing a crisis for UK producers, one of which is Ensus at Wilton. Knock-on effect on Teesside is considerable.
