Broad-nosed weevil, Costa Rica. Weevils always make interesting subjects, and those in this subfamily (Entiminae) are often beautifully colored, like this one that looks like it's covered in candy sprinkles (zoom in on the face in particular).

What’s really interesting is this specimen has intact deciduous processes! These tusk-like structures at the end of its mandibles, usually fall off shortly after the adult emerges, so aren’t often seen on museum specimens. The scar they leave behind, is the key ID feature of Entiminae weevils.

Phyllobiini is a tribe of the weevil family, subfamily Entiminae. The beetle is 6 mm long on a green grape leaf. The body is narrow, elongated, the pronotum is steam-shaped, strongly constricted in front and behind. The back of the rostrum is noticeable already than the forehead between the eyes. The upper part of the body is in uniform rounded emerald-green scales, between which there are hairs on numerous bare dots. Feeds on leaves

It's a weevil in the subfamily Entiminae, commonly known as the broad-nosed weevils. The name, Eupholus amalulu, is rather lovely.

I wonder if Bluey mcblueface was already taken? 🤔

A dorsal view of a brightly colored blue weevil against a white background. The weevil is facing left and is almost entirely covered in beautiful metallic shades of blue, most notably on the abdomen, where transverse bands of different shades of blue are separated by a few bands of black. This specimen in our collection was collected in Papua New Guinea, 40–50 years ago, if I remember correctly.

The weevil subfamily Entiminae has taken me a while to go through. Some of them are delightful chunky dumplings of beetles, like these: Barynotus moerens, Attactagenus plumbeus, Otiorhynchus rugosostriatus and Graptus triguttatus.
Barynotus moerens, a chunky brown weevil that seems to be quite scarce. Attactagenus plumbeus, another chunky brown weevil that seems to be quite scarce Otiorhynchus rugosostriatus, or Rough Strawberry-root Weevil, a black weevil. Graptus triguttatus, a brown weevil with distinctive dark-bordered pale marks on its wing cases.

Small head or huge body? 🧐🤔 You decide!

This handsome #weevil appears to be in the genus #Lachnopus (probably L. curvipes), a group that is endemic & diverse in the Caribbean.

While researching, I saw @entiminae.bsky.social worked on these beetles!
