STATEMENT: VA legislature votes to create Wildlife Corridor Grant Fund Richmond, VA -- The Virginia Senate voted 25 to 15 on Tuesday to pass Del. Shelly Simonds’s bill to create a Wildlife Corridor Grant Fund and voluntary donation options for Virginians to contribute to it. State allocations, federal grants and private donations can also be directed to this fund. This legislation builds on work to increase habitat connectivity for wildlife and decrease wildlife and vehicle conflicts in the Commonwealth. Virginia published a Wildlife Corridor Action Plan (WCAP) in 2023 and in 2025, $450,000 was allocated to a wildlife crossing project in Loudoun County, the first state money put towards implementing the WCAP. The Wildlife Corridor Grant Fund will be used to execute the Wildlife Corridor Action Plan by increasing data collection, implementing training programs for agencies and building new crossings. The bill passed the House of Delegates in February with bipartisan support. Following the Senate’s vote it will now head to Gov. Abigail Spanberger’s desk for signing. Elly Wilson, state director of Environment Virginia, issued the following statement: “The habitat our wildlife needs to survive in Virginia is increasingly fragmented by roads and buildings. This leads to dangerous collisions as animals roam in search of food, shelter and mates. Virginia is a top ten state for collisions causing injury and even death to wildlife and people. “Wildlife crossings are a proven solution to this problem. They provide safe paths for wildlife to cross under or over roads, preventing dangerous collisions and connecting habitat. In order to protect Virginians and the incredible creatures we live with, we need more wildlife crossings now. “This bill will provide much needed funding to get these crossings built and maintained. We thank the Virginia General Assembly for its action on this issue and urge Gov. Spanberger to sign the bill into law as soon as possible.” ### …
