#Eoconodon
Eoconodon! You may remember them from the end of The Last Days of the Dinosaurs.

This German shepherd-size mammal lived about 680,000 years after the impact that closed the Age of Dinosaurs, an early member of an ancient carnivorous group called mesonychids. Plus they’re super cute. 🧪

#FossilFriday First appearing in the fossil record a mere 700K years after Chicxulub, the wolf-sized triisodontid mesonychian Eoconodon is the oldest known mammalian apex predator.

A million years after the asteroid-driven catastrophe that closed the Cretaceous, Eoconodon padded through dense, warm forests in what’s now Colorado. This carnivorous beast was about the size of a German shepherd, one of the largest mammals of its Paleocene habitat. 🧪

Kind of obsessing over the rendition of Eoconodon from the Denver nature and science museum. 🥺
A wolf sized dog bear thing from 66 million years ago.

If you’ve read The Last Days of the Dinosaurs, you’ll recognize Eoconodon from the last narrative chapter as one snuffles through the nighttime forest in search of a snack.

I think it is al bit younger than 66 million as the museum said it evolved in the early Paleocene. And is maybe closer in size to a wolverine? The sources in the wiki article note it was “big for its time”

Not the first apex predator mesonychian though (that's the triisodontid Eoconodon)
