IDEA 💡 🕯️

An Epiphanytide liturgy or preaching service (like 7 Last Words or Stations) based on Christ’s seven signs in John.

We participated in an ecumenical Epiphanytide service at Carleton tonight—the evangelical, Episcopal, and RC groups collaborated. I celebrated the Eucharist and a couple of the students preached. We also admitted a catechumen which was pretty cool given the ecumenical nature of the assembly! 🕯️

It’s Monday. It’s epiphanytide. It’s lunchtime … it’s Christmas cake

In Western Christianity, Christmas is properly a twelve day feast, followed by Christmastide (or sometimes Epiphanytide, depending on your flavour) which runs to 2nd February.

The classic Book of Common Prayer doesn’t have “ordinary time.” It treats Epiphanytide, the ‘Gesimas, and the Sundays after Trinity as distinct seasons, each with its own character and emphasis. Each of these seasons has more than a millennium of Christian tradition.

Christmastide is over, yes. But it's still Epiphanytide, and I'm using that as my excuse to keep my Christmas tree up

We did it, Joe.

In your charity please add Layan Nasir to your prayers. She is a 24 year old Palestinian who was released from Israeli custody last December. She was sentenced to an additional 8 months in Israeli prison this past Thursday. She is a member of St. Peter’s Anglican Church, in Birzeit West Bank. ⚓️

Unpopular opinion perhaps, but I don't really miss the Gesimas. I like Epiphanytide having room to be its own thing.

High regard to all the replies. For me, it is the beginning of Epiphanytide because of the Sunday readings that follow.

Inspired by @revdavek.bsky.social – major commemorations in “Epiphanytide”:

• Visitation of the Magi
• Baptism of Christ
• Transfiguration
• Jesus’ first miracle at Cana
• Peter’s confession
• Paul’s conversion
• Candlemas
• (sometimes) the choice of Matthias the apostle

Ah!
It also makes sense as the last Sunday in Epiphanytide.

⚓ Something that aids the notion of an Epiphanytide is how all 3 lectionary yrs include the beginning of JC's public ministry:

• calling the first disciples
• reading Isaiah in the synagogue
• the Beatitudes
• the beginning of the Sermon on the Mount (& Plain)
• first healings and exorcisms

There is legitimate value in keeping a sort of Epiphanytide to Candlemas (and reinstating the Gesimas, although the earliest possible Septuagesima is 1/18.)

And (for us) pledge drive kickoff and the beginning of our version of Creation Season. I feel the same way about vocations Sunday during Epiphanytide.

Ha! Excellent.
They said that January was my "speakeasy second line New Orleans Jazz" month. I stream Dixieland all through Epiphanytide.

And if you STILL can't bear to take the tree down, you can carry through Epiphanytide to Candlemas on Feb 2nd.
