A Roma mosaic divided into nine figured panels. Aion with his zodiac-wheel dominates the primary emblema, with sea deities accompanied by hippocamps and other fantastical marine creatures surround it. Two extremely fine Hellenistic gold earrings depicting laughing winged Erotes holding torches. In this context (as opposed to funereal), this metaphor is almost certainly meant to symbolize ardent desire and burning love. Incredible details - look at the toes! 🏺 1/

Lenos sarcophagus, so called as resembles tub for pressing grapes (there is actually a hole on short side) at Badia di Cava de' Tirreni, Campania.

#Roman 220-240 BC. Garlanded erotes turn their gaze towards deceased depicted in form of busts in the lunettes.

This scene has the feeling of a chaotic gathering, which might be because Dionysus (Bacchus) the god of wine is involved. The lion takes centre stage, but the various Erotes and maenads surround the lion making for quite a party.

Despite the unfortunate name association, Hymen is actually the god of marriage, song, and feast, a god of good celebration. Wedding poetry belongs to him, and he is one of the Erotes, the winged love gods. If a wedding was to last, Hymen must be in attendance. #FairytaleTuesday

Tonight's #SarcophagusSaturday from the #VaticanMuseums offers us two separate pieces: an extraordinary #lid with a reclining woman whose arm is wrapped round with a #snake, and a child's #sarcophagus with a parade of #Erotes imitating a #Dionysiac #thiasos. #AncientBluesky 🏺
SARCOPHAGUS LID WITH RECLINING WOMAN AND SNAKE, C. 150 CE, AND CHILD'S SARCOPHAGUS WITH BACCHIC THIASOS, 260-270 CE. VATICAN MUSEUMS These disparate pieces were placed together in about 1790 in the Octagonal Courtyard of the Belvedere. The box is a child's sarcophagus from the later C3, with a playful series of Erotes imitating a Dionysiac triumph or thiasos. The central Eros, representing a tipsy Dionysus, has its face unfinished: it should be a portrait of the dead child. Ahead of him and behind him are Erotes making music and dancing. Atop the box is a beautiful reclining female figure from about 150 CE, which once had a dedication by Lucius Valerius Victor to his wife Andia Melissa. It entered the Verospi collection and was identified as a Cleopatra. Andia Melissa's head is a restoration, and so is the head of the snake wrapped around her bare right arm. But the arm is original and so is the snake. Perhaps it indicates Andia's devotion to Isis.

#SarcophagusSaturday brings us a medium-quality #sarcophagus from #OstiaAntica, now in the #BathsofDiocletian, made for a child initiate of #Isis and later recarved for an older boy. #AncientBluesky 🏺
SARCOPHAGUS WITH CLIPEUS AND EROTES, C. 250 CE. BATHS OF DIOCLETIAN This sarcophagus, found in Ostia in 1894, has an autumnal quality, with two Erotes carrying game, the one at left with two marsh birds, the one at right holding a hare by the hind legs. Baskets of harvested fruit stand next to them. Two Erotes on either side of the central clipeus are looking at their colleagues with the game. Between their feet are comic masks. Under the clipeus are two more birds pecking at the ground. The curious thing here is that the portrait in the clipeus has been recarved, and now shows an older boy's face, but remnants of carved hair from the original portrait suggest that the child was a young initiate of Isis.
